I always feel a little guilty for taking money from him when I visit, but it's almost like it makes him feel good to give me something when I walk out the door.

It IS NOT okay to tell Mom to fuck off. Try doing this when Dad is present and see how far you get (when he throws your ass THROUGH the door)
 
IF you are feeling guilty, like, you're getting $20 for nothing (which you are)-then yes, maybe every other or every third twenty you buy her some flowers or a no-brainer gift card where SHE buys gifts. You do this on a non-Mothers Day Weekend, and she will brag to her friends like you're the best son EVER. AND IT WON'T COST YOU A CENT!
 
BTW, beer or not, no matter what the rest of the board says, I think it's pretty nice you visit your Mother, no matter what you call her. I spent plenty of time ignoring my Father after my parents got divorced, and when he died, THEN, I figured out what I wanted to say. F'in brilliant. Try and make them proud of you. Keep talking. Communication is the beginning of understanding. You keep talking to them, they can't be suprised at what you want to do.

If it makes your Mom feel better to give you $20 just smile and say "Thanks, Mom".  Then get her something later with the money.  Unless it is causing her a financial hardship, that is.  When Mom is gone you will look back fondly at these times.

dude, if your mother has  to give you a $20 every visit its either because she knows she'll never see you unless she does...or because she's so desperate to receive any kind of recognition from you that she'll even GIVE you the money to buy her anything just to think you care.  Great.
