I think we can all agree that as long as Saban is coaching at Alabama, they will have a very strong defense.  Based on Alabama's relatively weak schedule alone, they should be one of the top statistical defenses in the nation again.

With the depth chart being so unsettled this time of the year, it's always difficult to discuss specifics.  But generally speaking, Alabama is absolutely loaded at linebacker and safety.  If uber-talented safety Landon Collins fully grasps the defense this season, Alabama will have one the top group of safeties in the nation.

One position where I think that Alabama is clearly better than everyone else is linebacker.  The insane talent and depth they have at that position is what you'd expect from a team that routinely pulls in the top recruiting class in the nation.

Alabama's defensive line will miss Jesse Williams athleticism, but he was never a prototypical nose.  That probably explains why a guy many projected to be drafted in the 1st round dropped to the 5th.  Overall I think the defensive line may be slightly stronger this season, particularly when it comes to pressuring the QB.

The most vulnerable position will be CB.  Not only will they miss Dee Milliner, but that is a position where they, comparatively speaking, lack depth.  The talent is there, but a few injuries at the corner position could prove to be problematic.

Talent is never really an issue for Alabama.  Their demons from year-to-year are developing new leadership, becoming assignment sound and complacency.

Although Alabama's defense will be young, overall I do not expect a significant drop-off on that side of the ball.  In fact, I think they have a shot to be better.

The reason I say that is this year Alabama will have one of the most potent offenses in the nation to go along with one of the best defenses in the country.  Assuming McCarron remains healthy throughout the season, this should be the best offense in school history.  A whole lot of things will have to go wrong on both sides of the ball for someone to outscore them this season.

Lindy's magazine (the only one I have) ranks Alabama's backfield as the 3rd best in the nation (and that may be low), their receivers #1 (and whoever is #2 really isn't very close), and their offensive line at #4 (probably about right).

Note:  Last year I said Alabama had the best backfield in the country.  Meanwhile Phil Steele ranked them as the 27th best unit in the nation.  He ranked their backfield behind such powerhouses as Army, Utah, Penn State, Virginia and Vandy.    Even after losing Jalston Fowler & Dee Hart to season-ending injuries I still thought they were probably the best, although a good argument could have been made for Oregon, Georgia and a couple of others,

If this team stays humble and focused this season, they won't lose.  The player most likely to get the big head is McCarron with the Katherine Webb circus following him around everywhere.  Where there are celebrities there is TMZ.  And where there is TMZ there is drama, and drama usually leads to disappointment.

Alabama isn't going to sneak up on anyone anymore, so odds makers will make betting Alabama expensive.  They'll still cover their fair share though.

What might be a better value is betting over the total, or over the team total.  Alabama should put up plenty of points this season.

Bill Belichick needs to coach college football. I'm sick and tired of Alabama running a train on everyone every single year.

I don't think the SEC and Alabama dominance is necessarily good for the college football brand.  When you have large sections of disinterested fans around the country because their team or conference has no shot, I don't think that's a good thing for the product as a whole.  Right now interest in college football remains high, but how long will that hold up if the current trend of southern dominance continues for another 5 years . . . 10 years???

Year after year Saban is stocking his roster with an insane amount of talent at every position on the field.  He is cranking out 4-5 1st round draft picks a year.  Alabama has a talent advantage against every team in the country, and in most cases a huge talent advantage.  It's almost to the point were it isn't fair for the rest of college football.  Heck, the students in Alabama hardly show up for the games anymore because they know the game will be a blowout ahead of time.

No, the students just leave the game early so they can collect from
their bookmaker.

jimmy - do you think Bama cover's in week 1 against Va Tech.   The spread is now Bama -18.5.  Does Bama cover that?

And the playoff system will only add to Alabama' dominance. Now they still have a good shot at a NC without winning the SEC championship. By the end of the year the teams with the most depth like Alabama/LSU should be able to grind through the 4 team playoff. With all due respect to Nick Saban; who is a great coach. But the teams who can actually match Alabama' talent are being coached by Les Miles, Mark Richt , Jimbo Fisher and Mack Brown. Aside from loony Les, who can actually win big games, those aren't exactly scary adversaries. Brian Kelly is a good up and coming coach who is beginning to stock talent though.

Absolutely they will.  I think the game will be similar to the Notre Dame and Michigan games for largely the same reason.  I would "Max Bet" anything under 17, and at least "Best Bet" anything under 21.  24 starts to get a little dicey, although I think they'll cover that too.  If I were an odds maker I would set the line at 24.

I think Alabama will get into the 40s just as they did against Michigan and Notre Dame, even though I think VT is weaker than either of those teams.  The question is how much will VT score???  I think their high water mark will be around 14.  I think this game shapes up as another 4 TD type of win.

There is too much talent across the nation for one team to corner the market on talent, so absolutely there will be some other very talented teams.

Georgia is a great example because that is a very talent rich state, and if they had a coach that could keep the talent instate and could coach that talent up, Georgia would be scary good.  There are more people in the greater Atlanta area than there are in the entire state of Alabama.  Fortunately for fans of other SEC schools, Georgia has a largely incompetent coach.  Saban has been picking Mark Richt's pocket for 5 years now.

Florida is loaded with talent, and Muschamp can coach.  Give him another year or two, and he may build that program to Alabama's level.

FSU & Clemson are sleepers in the south, but I'm not sure that either can keep up with Saban on a consistent basis.

Agreed that Bama won't go anywhere this year. And something I've learned real quick is that when you give Saban a lot of time to prepare, then teams are in trouble. Hence my excitement for them playing va tech and especially them playing A&M. I'm pretty firm that a strong reason they lost to A&M last year was bc they were coming off a brutal, physical game the week before. Saban can contain Johnny with those athletes and talent he has

And I'm glad someone else agrees with Florida and muschamp. I saw someone say Florida was garbage and will be again this year in a thread the other day, which was laughable. And I had to hear about how bad muschamp was as a coach here on the Oklahoma sports radio last year...another laughable moment. Love muschamp, and I like Florida.

Thanks Jimmy!   I also like Ok St -13 and Texas -42...yes, I know folks think anything over 40 is too much, especially for my Horns who have underperformed the last 3 years, but, for some reason, I think this will be like a 56-0 game.   BTW - Texas defeated a Davie coached New Mexico team at home last year 45 to 0.  That same New Mexico team defeated NMST 27-13.   I am extrapolation is not direct, but with NMST new coach, and lack of talent, along with Texas motivation, and the pressure felt by Mack Brown from the Texas elite "Cigars" I think he will allow a show for the fans.     I hope the anti-Texas backers drop it down to at least 40 or 39 prior to game time.    I would appreciate your thoughts on both the Texas and Oklahoma St matchups in week 1.  Thanks in advance!

I haven't done a lot of research at this point, so I'll give you my first impressions.

We have a couple of Miss. St. fans that post on this board, so I would be interested to hear their take on this game.  I watched Mississippi State in their bowl game against Northwestern, and they were hardly able to slow NW down.

What does that mean in this game???

Probably nothing, but it left a lingering sour taste in my mouth.  If Mullen is not able to sort out the defensive issues they had against Northwestern, then I think Okie State will cover.

Betting on Texas the first game of the season makes me very nervous.  I bet on Texas in 2010 & 2011 when they opened up against Rice-a-Roni as 31 & 24-point favorites respectively.  A 4th quarter TD by Rice '10 sealed my fate, but 2 4th quarter TDs helped me squeeze out a narrow cover.  Last year I had no money on their opener against Wyoming, but again they started slow and failed to cover a 31-point spread.

I guess what I'm saying is I'm not sure I trust a Mac Brown coached team to come out of the blocks fast and cover a huge spread for me.  I realize they're playing the Aggies of NMSU, and a lot of people are bullish on Texas this season, but 6 TDs is awfully steep.  You're basically betting on Texas to pitch a shutout here, and I'm real confident their defense can pull that off.  I think I'll shop around for a better value.

I love Brent Pease.  I think it's only a matter of time.  The question is will it be this season???

Everyone will be a lot more confident in Pease's offense in year 2, so that should help.  With Brissett's departure it's going to be imperative for Driskel to stay on the field this season.  Florida really needs to develop some receiving threats.  I think the running game will be solid again.  I also expect the defense to be very stout again.  The defense should keep them competitive in every game.

We are very lucky to have Brent Pease, he ran so many types of intelligent plays last year with the ground game. FSU players were saying after the game they had no idea what they were running with all the sets and pulls.. 

It all comes down to Driskel and I have no faith in him because he doesn't understand his position, luckily for him he got some talented Wide outs this last class and the RB situation is where Muschamp wanted it to be two years ago.

Florida has the same problem they have had for several years now.

They don't have a QB. It's as simple as this, if you don't have a QB you cant compete as a serious level.

My goodness man, the barley beat Louisiana Laff. last season. Why? No QB. The barely beat Mizz. Why? NO QB. Barely scored in the Jacksonville st game. Why? NO QB. They some how played out of their minds against FSU that game in which there is no way in hell that team could have beat FSU again in 100 attempts.

Mushead is IMO, below par as coach. He is a arrogant assss who thinks he is some kind of genius. Truth is, The Florida you seen in the Sugar bowl was the real Florida team. You know just like I know that they won by luck and smoke and mirrors last season. It will not repeat this year.
