Riplen is the best shortstop ever and if not Ripken then Honus Wagner.
After those two the Wizard and Banks have to be up there.
Jeter is a product of NY and he always played in the best line up in baseball with the best protection.
Ripken 2 time MVP. Over 400 HR, over 3000 hits... Revolutionized the SS position so guys like Arod and Jeter could play there. Jeter has never won the MVP and has never really been the stand out best player on his team.
Jeter is a first ballot HOF but he is not he best SS. He is talked about like he is Ruth, Mantle, Dimaggio but he is not those players. He is a great player but not the superstar and legends other players who have played for hte Yankees.

Can you please stop mentioning all time postseason #s...those lists are a joke. You cannot compare guys that play 3 rounds of playoffs and dont have to get to a WS to compile those stats to guys who used to play in just the World Series (1968 and prior years)
He is a hall of famer but Ripken , Alex Rodriguez, Ernie Banks (ever hear of him?), Honus Wagner, Robin Yount...all better than Jeter
he is very good in the top 10 ever its too hard to compare era's ozzie cal ernie honus arod robin all great

What you have to understand is he IS those players to most people. I haven't seen those guys play so Jeter IS MY Babe Ruth. He IS MY Mickey Mantle. He IS MY Joe DiMaggio. And to many, MANY Yankee fans...he's the greatest that they have ever SEEN.

Maybe that will put all the people who said "Jeter is overrated" to rest. The only reason people say he's "overrated" is because he continues to be great and doesn't do any more or any less than what he does. He's consistantly great and apparently that makes him "overrated". He'll probably increase his HR rate at this stadium though.

Hey Jeter is in a steroid era, he may not have used it but alot of players that played with him did. Therefore his numbers were help as he will see more at bats and he was pitch to with more frequency. I will say that he's innocent till proven guilty of any steroids accusation, and please save your breath about it. Most major leaguer did it if not all. Ernie Banks and Wagner including ozzie and even yount would have had much better number in the 90's and 2000. Then you throw in the fact that he plays for the most potent hitting team in baseball over the last 15 years(you may argue this) will definately help his numbers. HOF yes, good offensive ss yes, good defensive ss no. now picture any ss in the major league batting 2nd for the Yankees. Maybe you still don't get the point. Jeter is in a different era for these buy the best money can buy Yankees and i don't think that we may ever be able to answer this question correctly but as it stand Jeter is not even in my top 5 list of SS. I understand you love the Yankees but this is a forum with lots of knowledgable baseball people please go to a Yankee forum where is perfectly fine to say things like Posada is the best defensive catcher, Damon has the best Arm in baseball and Bernie Williams never used steroid amongst some of the smart comment most YanKKKe fans will make. Maybe is time some of you start smartening up.
By the way Pedro Martinez is the GOAT steroid ERA and was the best amongst Pitcher and hitters never knew why steroid did not work against him.
If you may know I was a Yankee fan raised in the Bronx and saw more games in the Bleachers than most of you have watch on TV.

Sorry Babs but Alex Rodriguez is a better SS than the Captain.
I would have never even thought of starting this post if AROD was still a SS somewhere else. But being that he has played 3B for the past 6 seasons and by the time he finishes his career he will be known as a 3B~man since he should have more time there.

Do you think Jeter used Roids? Neither do I.
Imagine all the pitchers he faced all those years that were on steroids. No one ever mentions that
