Great quote on homophobia (not made by Morgan Freeman btw):
"I hate the word 'homophobia.' Its not a fear. You aren't scared. You're just an a$$hole."

I think you both are right. There is some psychological basis for your statements too.
If one presumes that people feel more comfortable with other like minded people, it would explain why so many homosexuals display their sexuality in a open fashion in more 'liberal' areas, while those in less tolerant places would be less likely to do the same.

Uh, the "bible belt" states of Maine & California voted against gays being married.

is it possible the republicans are joining the 20th century and are ready to compete for the votes of normal people again?
Republicans (fully controlling 26 state legislatures, 30 Governorships, and the US house) are like politically extinct!!!!

it's not a fear as much as it's an insecurity. also, some people just can't value themselves without bringing another group down

Alternatively, people realize that besides the fact that the people who founded the American happy rights movement wanted nothing to do with marriage (and there are many gays who oppose the idea today), that the idea is silly. There is zero benefit to society from recognizing SSM. None. Benefits perhaps to the "couples", but none to society. When society sanctions a behavior, it should be one that benefits society.
It's also hard to posit a self-sustaining society that encourages same sex relationships. Because self-sustaining requires children.
I'd also add that no one advocating SSM has ever sufficiently explained to me why the legal removal of the one-man/one-woman structure doesn't open the door for state-recognized polygamy.
I realize that your position on this is nothing more than emotionalizing (you're a bigot and God tells you to be against it!!) but people can actually think about these things.
You shouldn't project your emotionalizing onto those holding the opposite view.
