investing in gold mining companies

what do you all think about investing in gold mining companies?  Do you guys think that if/when the economy breaks, we will have to re-establish our currency again, and by doing that we will have to back our money by gold like we did in the 50's?.  Lets hear an opinion on if gold mining companies are a good investment for the next couple years.  Thanks

I'm not a big fan of investing in mining companies... If you do , your betting on Gold and your betting on the fortunes of the mining company, as well..  In other words, if Gold goes up, your mining company can still be in the dumps if it doesn't run an efficient operation. 


Your better off investing in the GLD.    This is more of pure play on the gold currency and the metal itself...

I would suggest S. African ADR's if you want to own some mining stocks. Hell, you the diamond bonus too! But check the reserves so you know how much upside to expect.

I owned some of these back in the early 80's and made a pretty good chunk of change. Back then, I think they paid like a 20% dividend semi-annually?

JMO, but I've made money with these in the past. Might be worth a look?
