#6 Posted: 12/4/2011 2:15:09 AM Each state has Athletic Commission and follows federal procedures as well. Any sport that is considered brutal, is not allowed. Boxing was grandfathered in and major economy so doctors have oversight in most states as a rule to keep bouts safe and humane, and the ability to stop a fight. In states where they can't stop it, they can advise the referee to stop it (and I've yet to see a doctor telling referee to stop but the referee let's it continue.) The reason... liability. Yes it is dangerous and the ref and dr are there to protect you when you can no longer protect yourself. I see many bad corners that allow senseless fights... people say "but you would have missed a great comeback". Those are rare, and in those cases most fighters were dominated but punching and ineffective, and not major hurt. These are tough fights as severe jarring is what causes serious brain damage. Losing a few vicious fights might make a fighter retire early, but save his brain maybe 200 more rounds of head shots.

#9 Posted: 12/4/2011 5:51:04 AM Boxing Authority (three main regulations)
- the ringside doctor(s) are the highest authority on medical matters during
a boxing match and their opinions shall be respected at all times by
the referee
- at least two ringside doctors are in attendance at each match
- if the ringside doctor determines that the match should not continue, the referee shall stop the match

#10 Posted: 12/4/2011 6:03:02 AM The Notation at the bottom was left out for some reason. These are rules taken from Province of Nova Scotia but most is the same as the U.S. and each State Athletic Commission differs slightly as does each governing body (organization: WBC, WBA, IBF, WBO, etc..).
Also I made a new thread as mine was cutoff stating Boxing Authority.

#12 Posted: 12/4/2011 12:56:09 PM They should never have licensed him in the first place, if they were going to treat him like "damaged goods". We've all seen other fighters continue with a lot more damage. He was way behind and Smoger was going to let it continue (as he usually does).
As for the "he has to be a husband and dad", that's what Cotto told Max, that's it's not worth it, it's just a "job". Max said Margarito is willing to die in the ring and that would give him an "advantage", and Cotto disagreed.
Sometimes we have to protect the fighter from themselves. Good stoppage. I had the over, damn!! |

Why do they have that authority? Ever hear Muhammad Ali or Meldrick Taylor speak these days?

#15 Posted: 12/5/2011 4:26:36 PM I have very seldom seen a DR. stop a fight that I did not agree with. The average (JOE) has no clue what a Doctor knows. Thats why he is a Doctor. I had a sick friend go to the ER and have a Doctor check him. He told him to sit down and follow his finger with his eyes back and forth. After a few more things he said to him... I hate to say this to you but I think you may have a brain stem tumor. He did. Most Doctors know what is going on by looking at your eyes. They ARE smart!!! |

#16 Posted: 12/6/2011 3:58:07 PM BigPapa21, well stated. Many people wanted Margarito to take more a beating but after Mosley and Pacquiao, he had nothing left. Cotto only lost to Pacquiao, a war with Clottey and showed a future in boxing still.
