Tablets are so expensive to produce that they are all priced similarly.
When the ipad 3 was new, they were still selling the ipad 2 for $359 brand new because it was essentially the same thing.
You can get one used in the $200-$250 range I think for an ipad 2. If all you're going to be doing is basic stuff you won't use all the custom benefits of android.
If you want something new, you could go for a Kindle Fire for less than 200.
If you step up to an Asus Transformer you're essentially paying for an ipad anyways.
