Golf club help

It's finally golf season here in Minnesota. Looking at getting a new set of irons, or irons and clubs. I don't need anything high end. If I make a purchase, I could get out 30+ times. Otherwise I'm stuck with what I have, which is the set I've had the past 11 years (i'm 26). So the issue I'm having are the irons are way too short and in rough shape in general.

So question is...what should I be looking at? If I can spend $200-$300 to an average set, that'd be great! But alot of my golf buddies keep touting the $600+ irons. Any recommendations?

Consider high quality pre-owned with new grips.  More bang for your buck.

Should also note that I'm 6'4, so I would need longer shafts?!

Look for used Hogans or Wilsons. If you can swing steady these are big boy irons.

I don't play enough to know my handicap

I didn't play at all last year, and the 3 years before that I was in a league that played once a week. I played in high school, but was never very good. Just looking to get something new so I don't have to blame my clubs for how bad suck

Comparing prices is free and can save you major coin.

Just to get an idea about what is out there and the cost check out Amazon.com. Remember to specify you only want to see 4 star and above results. They do have New, Used, Refurbished. You can get a top end club that has been refurbished.

Worse case is you spend a bit of time getting an idea of the price you will spend without making a purchase.

Thanks Randisist!

My question is there's so many different options out there now. I do tend to have a bad slice, but that's just my swing speed and mechanics i believe. So many different shaft types and hybrids. I guess that's where I'm alittle lost.

I would just get some used clubs and have them fitted and regripped. Probably be a little less money then buying new clubs.

Buy a set of used clubs. Ping, Taylor Made, Cobra, Callaway. $300 will go a long way. Most big golf equipment stores carry used clubs and you could ask your local pro.

4 iron - pw, sand wedge, hybrid, driver and 3 wood.

Just go to ebay and get a set of used Taylormade 2.0's super forgiving and look good. Good overall hacker club If there is a set on there that is half an inch to an inch longer get those. Also stiff flex if you are athletic and swing hard, regular for smoother swing. There is a set on there now for 200 bucks.

damn near everything no worries said with new grips....

those burners are sold all around for that price.

u can get good quality used sh*t on ebay. if u gonna go taylor, go r11.

200 not enuf. go 3-400. worth the stretch. drop another 150-2 on a used quality driver.

for a driver, go find a 910d2 for u. there out there for the 150-2 range.

u need 1/2 to 1 inch over for all shafts. for who u r as a golfer, stiff or reg doesn't really matter. just find the price range.

There are some golf stores, such as Golf Galaxy or Golf Smith, in Minnesota. These stores should have free simple clubs fitting for you, ask for some club fittings. They should have plenty of used sets for sell, but you don't have to buy a set. i guess store reps will be happy to help.

A lot of good advice here .... I would say you definitely don't have to spend more than $400. Definitely stick with oversized club faces and you'll enjoy the game more likely. Absolutely get them custom fitted ; even more important since you're taller. Buying a good used set is perfecty fine, don't get into all the hype with the newest clubs with the newest technology. If you are willing to do your research n look around you can definitly score good used iron sets for $300 not factoring the shaft custom fitting.

Keep in mind , golf equipment manufacturers are overstocked with inventory because of the economy so you should easily be able to find good deals all over the place.
