Reading the article in time about the medical billing industry, not getting into the politics here but I was curious, what big medical bills has anyone here got, did u negotiate, how did u pay etc

American patients worry about paying medical bills and hospitals worry about being paid.  Not Canada and other countries with more government intervention.  The U.S. has the most unaffordable healthcare system in the world because of dominant private sector in a sellers market.

Great read.  I work in one of these "non-profits" as a clinician and have access to my dept&#x27;s equipment room.  I was ordering additional supplies from the computer and noticed a form on our equipment guy&#x27;s desk.  It had the markup % for equipment based on their cost to the hospital.  The markup for anything less than $50.....396%, $50-200...375%, and so on.   Anything over $5000 was only marked up 150%.

Well cant say ive had any big medical bills.  My dad however had heart bypass surgery.  The hospital wanted money like a week after.  They were calling here at the house saying that if we didnt pay in full they would send the sherriff out and start repossesing stuff things like that.  Dad just made payments what he could afford, sent them some money every month and eventually insurance paid for a lot of it, but its kind of like adam said the markup on those proceedures are so high i think they wrote most of it off.  Dad paid a fair share the insurance paid a fare share and most of what was left was just mark up costs and what the insurance didnt pay they just kind of said it was allright they had what they needed for the proceedure and ate it.

I had one bill recently that was $1500 after insurance covered so much.. Now when I tried to set up a payment plan of 100 a month they said no way and they wanted it all or I was turned over to collections.. Then they offered a 1 time payoff of $800 so that's what I did.

If you don't get a payment plan in writing they can turn you over to collections without warning even if you are making payments.. was told some will wait until your bill is under a certain amount because they don't negotiate under a certain dollar amount
