I usually volunteer every now and then at the local hospital. My assignment was at the front desk, near the Emergency Room entrance. So, I get to encounter all sorts of crazy individuals. However, today was not unusual, as always.
I stopped by the front desk in order to obtain a marker/highlighter. When I approached the desk, I saw this patient/individual who was sitting in the seat where we work. There are four open chairs for the patients to sit in, at the front of the desk. However, this lady decided to sit behind the counter where a uniformed employee/volunteer individual would sit. It is where the computer terminal and all the accessories are located.
I thought to myself, who cares where she sits, it is just a desk since no one is working at the desk right now. Mind you, she is an african-american lady. Black/brown, however you may refer her to or at the least, that is the color of her skin. She was in her mid 30's or 40's.
As I was searching through the two drawers, I had to get the key in an out-of-view place underneath the desk to unlock the third drawer where we would place miscellaneous forms, pens, post-it notes, etc. I unlocked the drawer, grabbed the marker/highlighter, then lock it back up again. During this time, this lady was watching what I was doing and this is what she had to say: "Oh yea! Lock it up..I wasn't going to steal anything! Pssst..."
I paused, think, and replied "I didn't mean to say anything about you, since.." She interrupted me and act like she could careless about what I was about to say. Further, she sneered and hiffed like a high school girl who would not warrant anything that doesn't stand her way, and continued on babbling to herself with her misfits.
I walked off with the maker/highlighter, thinking to myself..."what did i do wrong?" She thought I was being racist because I locked up the drawer? If that is so, I did not intend to be like that. That was the heavenly side of me. The devil side of me tells myself not to give a fuck what she thinks. She was in a prohibited section where she shouldn't be. Her negative thoughts are just evidence of her being racist to herself. That, I shouldn't apologize for any wrong-doing.
In the end, I know one person does not speak for all ethnicities. However, most of the time, I really come to the conclusions that african-americans are just like this: obnoxious, rude, thinks everyone is being racist to them, and that we should apologize for any if yet little mistakes that they think ought to deserve.
What's your opinion on this story, mateys?

i think it's in my best interest to have an open mind about all races and religions ... so i try.
if you can't be the better man in a situation like that than you have issues ... in my opinion.
sometimes you just have to be grateful that you're not the miserable one sitting at a desk thinking that everyone is racist ... maybe she hit the nail on the head ... no?

Even with an open mind, they still read you the wrong way, mate. It is, as though, they want you to be bias against them so they can have an excuse. This is why their attitudes are so upsetting to the general public.
How would you react if you were in my situation? If you were just minding your own business and she just happened to start a cause, would you react any differently?
You've heard of the term: "watcha looking at?" It is mostly spoken though...._______ (fill-in-the blank).

Guess what you are paying her hospital bill to! The enabler ALWAYS becomes the bad guy. Should have replied"I know you wont" and walked off.

I was going to say those exact words, smile, and walk off; but she interrupted me half-way. I just know I need to walk away before she act all hysterical and in order to gain audiences.

Yes, detox. Trash comes in all available colors, shapes, & sizes. But it does seems like one category has more than the other.
I would know, if I happened to encounter a caucasian, a hispanic-origin, or even an asian-origin female, I would not be confronted with such hissy fit of unknown character.

I had to take my bro to the ER today, that place is depressing. I'd just say she was like the majority of people in that place and felt like crap for the reason that she was there in the first place. You crossed her path and she made the only obnoxious comment she could think of. No big deal. My response would have been "just leaving it how I found it" or "you can have anything u want from that drawer lady, I dont care". I tend to use very basic logic with people when they act stupid.

let me keep this real simple. She would of stole something if you didn't lock that drawer. That's why she mentioned it. It's the same reason why some people get defensive when they're guilty. She's probably stolen so much shit in her life it's a gut reaction to get defensive about everything.
I would have called security because she shouldn't have been sitting there, and then when security came I would of sat back and enjoyed show. Cheers

Just tell her that it is procedure to lock the drawer, and move on. It is futile, and life is too short to argue with stupid people. Also, since she had no business sitting in the seat, you could have told her that she needs to get up.

Ummm... here's what I think. She's a moron and that has nothing to do with her skin color. Morons come in all colors. And why was she sitting there? Who knows? Why do morons do what they do?
Dookie might be right. She might have stolen something. But moving forward... She's playing the race card, and this, among other things, makes her a moron. If she had any clue, she would know that you keep that drawer locked at all times. She at the least should have figured this is a possibility.
Quite simply, I don't have time for people like this. Nor do you I'm sure. Maybe she hates her life. Maybe she hates her job. Maybe she hates everybody. Who cares? I don't. The next time someone says something like that to you, simply say "Have a nice day" and smile and walk away. Then forget about it.
