Preview: Dallas at Philadelphia

When: 1:00 PM ET, Sunday, January 1, 2017
Where: Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The Dallas Cowboys have secured home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, allowing the NFC East champions the luxury of exercising caution as they visit Lincoln Financial Field for their season finale versus the Philadelphia Eagles. Rookie Dak Prescott is expected to start Sunday's tilt before likely giving way to No. 3 quarterback Mark Sanchez as Dallas attempts to walk a fine line between keeping sharp while doing its best to avoid injury.

"I guess no true discussion," Prescott said, when asked how much he'll play on Sunday. "I'm just going to be ready to play the whole game and prepare as if I am and let them do that." Running back Ezekiel Elliott (NFL-best 1,631 yards) scored twice to up his TD total to 15 in Monday's 42-21 rout of Detroit and resides six scrimmage yards shy of becoming the third rookie in NFL history with 2,000 in a season - joining Eric Dickerson (2,212 in 1983) and Edgerrin James (2,139 in 1999). Elliott's length of participation also is in question and he'll likely cede carries to Darren McFadden with little to gain and a lot to potentially lose in the season finale. Another rookie is in line to break an NFL record as Philadelphia's Carson Wentz (franchise-best 352 completions) is two short of Sam Bradford's mark in 2010.

ABOUT THE COWBOYS (13-2): Dez Bryant stepped up with a pair of receiving touchdowns and even threw a left-handed scoring strike to veteran tight end Jason Witten in last week's mauling of the Lions. The duo also shined bright in the first meeting with Philadelphia, as Bryant had four receptions for 113 yards and a touchdown and Witten reeled in a 5-yard scoring catch in overtime as Dallas posted a 29-23 victory on Oct. 30. Witten, who resides 26 yards shy of Michael Irvin's franchise record (11,904), ranks second all-time among tight ends in receptions (1,088) and receiving yards.

ABOUT THE EAGLES (6-9): Wentz's favorite target, Jordan Matthews, may not be able to suit up as he missed his second consecutive day of practice on Thursday due to an ankle injury. Matthews reeled in a career-high 11 receptions for just 65 yards and a touchdown against Dallas in October and has 26 catches for 278 yards and three scores in his last three encounters with the Cowboys. Matthews was limited to two catches for 12 yards but fellow wideout Nelson Agholor had a 40-yard touchdown grab in a 24-19 victory over the New York Giants last week to mark the first time he's reached the end zone since the season opener.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Philadelphia S Malcolm Jenkins recorded two interceptions - including one returned for a touchdown - versus the Giants to earn NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

2. Prescott's 13 victories this season ties Pittsburgh's Ben Roethlisberger (2004) for the most by a rookie quarterback.

3. Eagles LB Connor Barwin has registered at least one sack in four straight games versus the Cowboys.

PREDICTION: Eagles 21, Cowboys 16
