A little over a week ago, Mike Wilkening wrote an excellent story about how the San Francisco 49ers had become Super Bowl favorites at MGM Resorts. The team opened at 10/1 in February and was bet all the way down to 4/1.
“Is this an accurate reflection of what I believe to be the case, that they’re the favorites for the Super Bowl?” MGM's Jay Rood told Pro Football Weekly. “No. We’re trying to manage (the) liability at this point.”
We called around and found out the MGM wasn’t the only shop getting hammered with 49ers money. The Las Vegas Hotel SuperBook and Lucky’s also said that San Francisco is being bet more heavily than any other team on their future boards. The Niners are 10/1 at the LVH, down the original 20/1 price, while Lucky’s is dealing San Fran at 8/1 after opening them at 13/1.
The Chicago Bears are the second most bet team in Las Vegas to win the Super Bowl. Chicago’s odds to win the Lombardi Trophy dropped at all four Las Vegas shops we polled. The Denver Broncos' odds dropped significantly but that can be attributed to some hotshot quarterback named Peyton Manning they picked up in the offseason.
The Green Bay Packers, Detroit Lions and Kansas City Chiefs were three other teams whose odds to win the Super Bowl were lowered. Meanwhile, the price is right for New Orleans Saints backers who think the team will manage fine with head coach Sean Payton suspended for the year. New Orleans opened as short as 6/1 and is now 12/1 or longer in Vegas.
Here’s a look at every NFL team’s opening and current odds to win the Super Bowl at MGM, Lucky’s, Cantor Gaming and the LVH:
