NFL props: Who will be the league's top rusher?

Jacksonville’s Maurice Jones-Drew is the NFL’s defending rushing-yardage champion, but two running backs have shorter odds attached to them in the race for the 2012-13 title.

Arian Foster opened as a 7-2 favorite, followed by Ray Rice at 9-2 and Jones-Drew at 5-1, according to Cantor Gaming odds.

The proposition is currently available for wagering at all Cantor sportsbooks in Las Vegas.

The skinny

Most likely winner, regardless of odds: Jones-Drew. His ongoing holdout aside, I project the Jaguars running back to finish ahead of Foster, Rice and LeSean McCoy (8-1), his closest competitors on the odds board.

At the listed price, I want no part of: The field. It’s extremely likely the eventual winner will be one of the individual players listed. A field option is always appreciated in betting propositions, but I’d need juicier odds before getting involved.

Intriguing long shot: Steven Jackson at 18-1. The Rams running back figures to get plenty of opportunities to carry the ball and could benefit from an improved offensive line in St. Louis. Especially at the price, I’m willing to bet Jackson remains in top physical form.

The complete list from Cantor Gaming:

Arian Foster 7-2
Ray Rice 9-2
Maurice Jones-Drew 5-1
LeSean McCoy 8-1
Ryan Mathews 10-1
Adrian Peterson 12-1
Darren McFadden 9-1
Jamaal Charles 15-1
Chris Johnson 9-1
Marshawn Lynch 18-1
Shonn Greene 12-1
Steven Jackson 18-1
Trent Richardson 18-1
Frank Gore 20-1
Michael Turner 20-1
Matt Forte 25-1
Beanie Wells 25-1
DeMarco Murray 20-1
Reggie Bush 20-1
The field 7-2

Odds are subject to change, and all NFL teams must play at least 14 regular-season games for action.

Cam Newton ;) I have to go with Arien Foster, Houston runs the ball well and have a pretty nasty OL. They have a great passing game, which will open the run for Foster to chew up killer yards ...
