NBA Finals MVP odds: LeBron the fave but not the most valuable

Odds are out for the NBA Finals MVP and there is one glaring exception, in my opinion.

LeBron James is a deserving favorite at +150, but the Miami Heat’s star forward hasn’t been the best performer during the NBA Playoffs. That nod goes to San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, who has led his team to a perfect 10-0 record in the postseason (7-3 ATS) and has them up 2-0 on the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference finals.

I know. I know. Coaches can’t win the finals MVP honor, but when you stand back and look at, no one is making more of a difference than Popovich, who should be considered one of the greatest postseason planners of all time whether he gets the Spurs to the finals or not. He earned his second NBA Coach of the Year award this season, which seems like two or three too few.

Maybe we could start a petition to get the Spurs to alter his contract to that of a player-coach, kind of like Bill Russell in the 60’s? Or maybe not. I think Pop could swing the ball and is good for a few hard fouls.

Anyway, Popovich’s right-hand man, Tony Parker, is the next best thing. He’s sitting behind James at +200, along with Kevin Durant (+500), teammates Manu Ginobili (+750) and Tim Duncan (+1,000), Dwyane Wade (+1,000), Paul Pierce (+1,200), Rajon Rondo (+2,000), Russell Westbrook (+3,000), the injured Chris Bosh (+3,000), and Ray Allen.

Any other player – AKA the Field – is set at +1,000.

Value is with Duncan imo, despite Parker being the obvious choice if you think the spurs win it all... with the way big men have had their way against the heat
