1* Oakland (8:10 ET): My last free play (Saturday) was on the A's and they took care of business as expected, beating up on the Rangers. They won again Sunday as well in comfortable fashion and now turn to the division's other doormat from the Lone Star State, that being the Houston Astros, who come in as losers of five straight. Oakland took two of three last week at home vs. the Astros and should have no problem at least doing the same here. Look for them to take Monday's opener.
I've been saying since basically the start of the year that Oakland is the best team in baseball. Their +170 run differential blows every other team out of the water. This is a team that's won each of its last three series. They have also thoroughly dominated Houston this year, scoring more than 7.0 rpg while batting better than .300. Since the start of last season, they are 22-7 head to head w/ the 'Stros. It certainly doesn't help the home team's cause that they've been playing very poorly here at Minute Maid Park this month. In their last nine home games, Houston is 1-8 and barely averaging 2.0 rpg. They are batting only .204 collectively.
Jesse Chavez gets the nod tonight for the A's. He allowed only two runs on four hits in his start last week vs. Houston. The fact that he hasn't been exactly working deep into games lately doesn't really concern me. That's because Oakland is 21-10 this year vs. left-handers and will get to face southpaw Brett Oberholtzer tonight. Oberholtzer has a 5.08 ERA and 1.515 WHIP at home this season. The A's are 2-0 this year as a road favorite of -175 or higher on the money line. 1* Oakland.
