UFC on Fuel TV 2: Thiago Silva returns to UFC as an underdog
Opportunity knocks for the once-troubled Thiago Silva when he takes on Alexander Gustafsson as a +180 underdog in Saturday’s first UFC event in Sweden.
Silva is coming off a 12-month suspension for taking a banned substance and then tampering with his urine sample. He injured his back 45 days from a scheduled bout with Brandon Vera and took a substance to ease the pain instead of pulling out of the fight.
Now, a year later, he gets a shot at Gustafsson after Antonio Rogerio Nogueir was forced to pull out of the fight.
“The fact that I haven’t been able to fight for one year is not going to change much, as I took this time off to fix my body, to take care of my injuries,” Silva told reporters.
“You know, I don’t know too much about Gustafsson. I just saw a couple of fights, he’s a tough guy as is everybody in the 205-pound division but I’m ready to fight him and I have no problem with that, I’m going to fight him hard as hard as I fight anyone.”
Gustafsson (-220), a 6-foot-5 lefty, has won his last four fights and five of his six UFC bouts. Other odds for UFC on Fuel TV 2:
