ESPN's Colin Cowherd believes his picks move Vegas lines

ESPN Radio personality Colin Cowherd is a lot of things, and apparently he’s adding Las Vegas wiseguy to that list.

The opinionated host of The Herd stated on Tuesday’s show that his weekly football picks, the Blazing Five, are so well respected by the betting community that they force oddsmakers to move the lines.
Cowherd is 21-9-4 ATS picking football winners this season.
While sounding off about the Wisconsin Badgers, Cowherd mentioned that he thinks the best bet on the Week 8 board is Michigan State at home to the Badgers this Saturday. The line opened at +9.5 MSU and had dropped to 8.5 (now +8 at some books), prompting Cowherd to proclaim his influence over the Las Vegas sports betting scene.

“I am the one guy on this network that talks gambling,” he told listeners. “And I have a huge audience, I have a couple million people. We have huge numbers in Vegas. Nobody wants to admit this, because it sounds like I have a huge ego, but when I go on the air and say, ‘bet something’ it does move the line.”

Cowherd got his start as a sports broadcaster in Las Vegas and was named Nevada’s Sportscaster of the Year five times before moving to Florida, Oregon and eventually landing a hosting gig with ESPN in 2003. According to his show's website, he’s 21-9-4 against the spread on the year, going 2-1-2 ATS last week.

“Every wiseguy is listening. Every book guy is listening,” Cowherd stated Tuesday.

While Cowherd’s record is impressive (61 percent), long-time Las Vegas oddsmaker with Lucky’s Sportsbook, Jimmy Vaccaro, believes Cowherd doesn't have as big an impact as he’d like to think.

“I don’t think Colin could move the lines in Bristol, let alone the rest of the country,” Vaccaro told Covers.com. “He has a microphone and millions of listeners, but he doesn’t have the power to move lines, especially if he’s just betting favorites. A blind squirrel could fall down on favorites and be up this year.”

Vaccaro admits that he listens to The Herd from time to time, when traveling in his car, and applauds Cowherd for being so open and honest about his sports betting, when a lot of media types tip-toe around pointspreads and totals.

“I love these things,” Vaccaro says. “Anything that sparks interest in betting - the more the better. As for Colin, tell him to keep picking and keep winning.”

It is amusing that people actually believe this. Talked to a few people at the biggest sports book in Vegas. They literally laughed. He has RJ Bell on his show.... one of the biggest tools in sports. Cowherd is a moron, no sharps/book guys listen to his show.

Cowherd is a delusional megalomaniac. Broke up his marriage to become a sports 'personality'. Wears too much make up for his tv show featuring him as the sports pimp.

This guy is one of the most annoying c suckers on radio. His goofy little laugh and the way he Spans the Globe. Since when has he done any segment outside the States. I only listen during morning commute since Memphis sports radio is even worse e.g. George Lapides.

If he has 2 million listeners and 1/4 are wagering money on his picks wouldn't that sway the public betting trends? I don't listen to him, but he might have a point. Whether he is 61% or not isn't relevant IMO to him being able to sway public opinion. Just my .02 cents.

Colin Cowherd moves the 'line' ? says who? he's a fuckin' radio personality, nothing more, he's paid to talk controversial 'shit' and uses sports wagering as his stepping stone to success, with absolutely no 'real' handicapping information attached to his so called picks, he just can't be taken serious, and has no documented success to support any of his ludicrous opinions, it's clear this is media connected to handicapping, which just does not mix...Colin Cowerd moves the line? sure he does, in his wildest dreams...their is only one man on the planet who actually moves a line of his desire...Billy Walters, case closed

cowherd is a pretentious prick...i did hear that comment about 1pm cst today. he claims that mich st is the pick of the week at 9. he also claims that his degenerate radio followers went out and took mich st on his word... the man says a lot, but has marginal substance. i think his support for mich st beating the spread may be a contrarian indicator that Wisc will role. he lost a lot of cred today with that comment. he should not comment on spreads in the first place. not because he think he influences the spread, but because he is in the entertainment business and should focus on the sport not the wagering. if it comes out one day that cowherd was touting a mich st, but then actually personally bet on wisc, then he will have no cred and it will be a scandal and he could get fired. he needs to thank God or luck or karma or something for his good fortune to make money the way he does. however, that can be taken away quickly with stupid comments. ask don imus...

The reason he almost strictly picks pro games now is because he was so god awful picking college games the last 2-3 years

Yep, The 1st year or two he was at ESPN he couldn't lose a college game. The guy was 70%. Like you say, after that, he couldn't find his ass with both hands. Speaking of two people that couldn't win a bet if their life depended on it, how about mike & mike. Sad.....

One thing Cowherd knows is his football, and he actually bets a lot of underdogs... I wish he would at least give a little more respect to hockey...
