Pick 'n' roll: Thursday's best basketball bets

San Antonio Spurs at Chicago Bulls (-2, 190.5) odds provided by logans

Anytime the team with the best record in the NBA by far is an underdog, you have to take a close look. The host Bulls are 8-2 SU and 7-3 ATS in their past 10 games. Over that span, the team has won six straight at home and climbed into the discussion for top seed in the Eastern Conference. But is there recent play good enough to trip up the Spurs?

San Antonio is 8-2 SU and ATS over its past 10 games, nine of which have been on the road. Oddsmakers, however, think a road weary Spurs team may decide to fold late against a physical, motivated Bulls team. Spurs coach Greg Popovich already has begun tinkering with his lineup to get players rest, including brining All-Star Manu Ginobili off the bench for the first time this season in a blowout win at Washington last weekend.

“They’re feeling a few bumps and bruises, but they’re character guys,” Popovich told reporters. “They’re professionals, and they know what’s expected of them. They know where they want to be at the end of the year and they’re working towards that. So no game can be left without trying to get better.”

And that’s just the way the Spurs have played this season. San Antonio has yet to mail in a game after nearly four full months of games. As underdogs, the Spurs are a phenomenal 6-1 ATS, always playing more rested or motivated teams close.

Don’t expect Thursday in Chicago to be any different.

Pick: San Antonio

UCLA Bruins at Stanford Cardinal (-1.5, 129)
odds provided by logans

No team in the Pac 10 is crashing the boards like UCLA. The Bruins have out-rebounded their past 10 opponents and during that stretch the team is a staggering 9-1 SU and 6-3-1 ATS. The recipe for success for UCLA is simple: grab rebounds to grab wins.

Sophomore forwards Tyler Honeycutt and Reeves Nelson have been two of the team’s biggest pillars in the paint. Over the team’s past five games—all wins—the duo is are combining to average nearly 20 caroms per contest.

"Honeycutt and Reeves in particular have been really consistent on the glass, and they're two of the best in the league," said UCLA coach Ben Howland. "That's a huge factor going forward."

Stanford, meanwhile, is coming off an 11-point defeat at Washington and has lost six of its past 10 games. Over that stretch, the team has failed to grab more than 30 rebounds five times. The Cardinal also haven’t been very successful against the Bruins lately. UCLA has won seven of the past eight meetings and is 4-3-1 ATS over that span.

“We’ve got to continue to get better,” Stanford coach Johnny Dawkins said.

The Cardinal will get better—just not against the Bruins.

Pick: UCLA

Does anyone like Cal tonight against USC? Both teams are mediocre at best but I like Cal coming off three straight losses, 2 on the road to good Washington schools and one before that at home to a good Arizona team. They need a win here and to be at home after three tough games two in which they got blown out and their last game was a tough 4 point loss. USC is 2-7 on the road against Cals 9-5 home record. Can definitely see this being a close game but with USC being a defensive minded team and Cal being the over team DoobieBrother talked about, I can see Cal getting that win tonight. Cal -2.

Phoenix has been iffy recently at home losing to Sacramento as a 9pt favorite and letting Utah stick around the whole game and winning by 1. Its true that Phoenix needs to hit the three ball to win this game but will they. Their scores have been lower than usual and I think with the number being at 205.5 and opening at 207, this could be a low scoring game which would favor Dallas in my opinion. Dallas just played yesterday so when you look at it from a public eye, Phoenix seems like the play, they should run Dallas right out of the gym, right? Who knows. I know Steve Nash is playing tonight but it says he missed shootaround for a personal reason? I guess that could be anything but it is something. Good luck either way. I'm rolling with Chicago with some of yous in here...Two of the best ATS teams so lets take the home team. Plus, Chicago was up big at half in San Antonio last time and gave it up, that shouldnt happen tonight.

excellent write up. agree with it all. go suns. btw, suns defense has improved. but it is a gut call, must admit. yeh, i wonder about that nash shootaround business. he's married. you know he gets his busted just like the rest of us. i don't care whether she's a super model. this is a game i probably wouldn't play if there were more choices.

Wow....the Suns have gone from -1 to +2....that's a big switch and over the goldern number!!!......I need more research.......I kinda think Dallas might lay low....but......they have some players on their team like Peja and Rodrique that may be getting in their grove and might not be able to come out of it and just kick back!...plus Dirk always plays hard against his buddy Steve Nash!!!!....and then again Phoenix plays well at home and blows teams out.....Home dog is always tempting......I need a couple of beers and some time to get a wrap around this one.....Hopefully when Chicago starts to whoop ass I will feel better one way or another.....Good Luck SP and thanks for the breakdown!!!

2* USC/California Over (134.5) - Bears are the Pac 10's "over" team, shooting 47.2% and 39.0% in conference play while allowing 47.2% and 37.4%. They have notched at least 85 in 4 of 6 Pac 10 home games. The "over" is 6-2 USC on the road, 8-0 Cal as Pac 10 home fav 4<, and 6-0-2 L8 meetings @ Berkeley.

On a Spurs Bulls game I am taking Double Result bet - both ways. Risking a little with hope to take it big as in recnt thursdays at least one game has ended in an opposite result than halftime

2* Iowa (+8.5) over Northwestern - Hawkeyes have slight statistical edge and play in revenge for 17 point home loss. Teams have played close in Evanston with 6 of L7 meetings decided by 6 or less. So far this week 9-10 (-4.0).

I waited all day. Finally the dallas line moved to -2. Hate to go against the popular wisdom, but i'm all over the suns-- the only clear play in the two games. No one's menntioned that Nash played four minutes in the first game-- hit his head on tyson chandler's knee and suffered numbness in his hands. Phoenix has won 7 of 10. Dallas got crushed last year on the seond half of a btb going into the all-star break. Dallas is much improved. I still can't get the taste of that Miami heat meltdown and the Golden State upset out of my mouth. Phoenix has won 7 of 10, including beating Boston by 17 at home on the second half of a btb. I look at phoenix a little like houston who lost to dallas by four at home. I'm betting Phoenix up to 5. For those of you who haven't seen Phoenix lately, check out Marcin Gortat. Stan Van Gundy will never live down underutilizing such a talented beast. Give the Phoenix GM kudos for that steal! Lookin' forward to the time off over the break. GL to all. tough two games to pick.

When game like that is played - there are few criterias to examine the possible outcome: latest form and ability - cancel that as both are able and in a pretty good form, historical stats - cancel that too since both teams are very different from the last meetings, home field advantage - cancel that as two teams in that level can win anywhere, agility and motivation - here the Suns are in advantage because of Dallas playing last night and travelling and most of all the motivation factor - the Suns have a clear edge here: while the Mavericks can easily afford loosing here - the Suns are in no position of dropping games just like since they need a serious run to be continued to enter the playoffs at all and from an advantegous position as they deserve. If any of you paid attention yesterday to the Cavs win - you will understand my point about the motivation factor helped by a good for nothing pre ALl Star week. Pretty easy pick Phoenix, especially supported by the fact that Vegas wants exactly that - a Phoenix win. I can go on and on about this -but it is all Phoenix. I am taking a teaser of Phoenix -5 too.
