Hot lines: Wednesday's best MLB bets

Chicago White Sox at Minnesota Twins odds provided by betjamaica (-105, 8.5)

The Minnesota Twins have risen from the ashes in the American League Central to pull just 3.5 games behind the Detroit Tigers in the division.

Minnesota wrapped August with an 8-2 record in its last 10 games heading into Tuesday’s Game 2 with the White Sox. Chicago’s current funk has also helped the Twins' surge. The ChiSox have plummeted in the standing after posting an 11-17 record last month.

The biggest force pushing the Twins to within striking distance of the division title has been the team’s pitching staff. After underachieving all summer, the Minny arms posted a collective 3.17 ERA last week and made up for the lack of offense. The Twins managed to score just 20 runs on .255 hitting.

"We're playing pretty good and trying to keep it going," catcher Joe Mauer told the media. "We're worried about us winning games instead of looking at the scoreboard."

Minnesota took Game 1 4-1 Monday night and has won 20 of the past 26 meeting with the White Sox at the Metrodome heading into Tuesday.

Pick: Minnesota

Kansas City Royals at Oakland Athletics odds provided by betjamaica (-160, 9)

When the cat’s away the mice will play.

The Kansas Royals are hoping this age-old adage proves true with manager Trey Hillman away from the team following the death of his father in-law. Hillman left Sunday and is expected to miss all three games with the A’s this week.

Bench coach and former Toronto Blue Jays skip John Gibbons has taken the reigns in Hillman’s absence. He took one on the chin Monday, losing 8-5 in Game 1 in Oakland. That loss was Kansas City’s 81st of the season and seventh in the past 10 games heading into Tuesday.

"I've got a good idea how (Hillman) does things and what he wants to do," Gibbons told reporters. "So I'll just run with that."

Perhaps Gibbons should try doing the opposite of his superior given that the Royals are on pace for another 100-loss season and have a tough schedule facing them in the final weeks of the season.

Going to the bump for Gibbons is struggling righty Brian Bannister. He’s been roughed up in his recent outings and has just one win in his nine starts since the All-Star break.

Pick: Oakland

So after losing twice now on the St.Louis Runline . . . i am going to take it again tonight . . . and another runline to boot! ST. LOUIS CARDINALS -1.5 (-130) 2 units -- Matt Holliday is pure . . . Carpenter is unreal at home. TEXAS RANGERS -1.5 (+110) 2 units -- I love this lineup . . . they MASH. as long as they get a decent outing from Hunter (2.95 era / 1.17 whip) they should win by at least 2 runs. LOS ANGELES DODGERS (-165) 2 units -- Billingsly on the mound . . . great pickups the past few days. . . . this team is the best in baseball

Rays -115. Going to play the "line" again on this one. I have been on it since this morning at a pick-em, and it has not budged towards the Sox one bit. Some offshores actually have the Rays at -125. Sox are a huge public play team and with Beckett going tonight, it should of "jumped" a little. Both of these SP in a funk, especially Beckett. Garza does not pitch well in September. The OVER is tempting, but not going to play it, Would not surprise me if one SP or both get lit up tonight. 2 units The CWS play hit big for me, as a 9th inning come back was nice for once(Nathan blowing a lead???), CUB and Lilly score again for me.

PimpNation- Hey bud I just read your post...been swamped at work all day. I try to follow the following system I read about in April 2009. I have deviated from it some here and there however. It has worked well for me this MLB season. On The 2nd rule, I will go as high as +180 or so and not limit it to a +150 dog. The Program The Baseball Underdog System is based on a law of averages showing that, over the long term, MLB underdogs beat favorites about 4 games out of 9 (or 44% of the time). Even with moneyline odds on underdogs earning you better than even money -- meaning that at +130 you lay $10 to win $13 -- you need to rack up better than a record of 4 wins and 5 losses every day to make substantial profits. For example, let's assume you bet $10 on each of 9 underdogs today, with each getting +130 moneyline odds. If you win 4 games, you profit $13 each or $52 total. But the $50 you lose when 5 favorites win gives you a slim $2 profit overall. So instead of simply betting on the underdogs in every game, you must weed out about two-thirds of the games by following my 3 simple criteria: First, eliminate games in which the underdog has lost 3 or more games in a row and/or the favorite has won 3 or more games in a row. This prevents you from throwing away money on an underdog on a bad skid or an underdog facing a red-hot offensive team whose bats may more than make up for its own mediocre pitching. Second, eliminate games in which the moneyline odds on the underdog are greater than +150 or so. If the odds are any higher than this, there's undoubtedly a good reason, most probably that the underdogs are seriously out-manned. So scratch such games and move on. Third, eliminate games in which the underdog is facing one of the Top 20 pitchers in the league, according to earned-run average (ERA). While various newspapers and Internet Web sites can provide you with ERA statistics, I strongly encourage you to use the adjusted (or "normalized") ERA rankings compiled by Jeff Sagarin(R) and displayed on USA Today's Web site at SAGARIN RATINGS in which Sagarin uses somewhat complicated data to assign each pitcher in the league a number for what his ERA "should be." He determines an ERA for every pitcher as compared to other pitchers' performances from 1946-1999, resulting in a stat he has dubbed an NPERA (or "normalized predicted earned-run average"). When you go the USA Today's site, you'll notice that it lists the American and National Leagues separately, and also that it breaks pitchers into categories according to number of innings pitched. For each pitcher ranked, there is much information included, but you're primarily interested in the first 5 columns, which list the pitcher's rank in the entire league, his name, his team, whether he's a righty or a lefty, and his NPERA: Rank Name Team R/L NPERA #1 Mike Mussina NYY R 1.99 Because ranked pitchers are broken into categories according to number of innings pitched, make sure you don't overlook a pitcher who's been injured or just moved from a reliever to a starter role or otherwise hasn't racked up enough innings to make the primary list. He still could be among the league's better pitchers yet is ranked highly in a category of lesser innings pitched further down the screen. This applies mostly early in the season. Following the 3 primary criteria, on a day with a full slate of as many as 15 games, you should be left with between 3 and 9 underdogs on which to wager. Using our example Formula, you will put $20 on each game's moneyline. Don't forget that all bettors should have access to more than one sportsbook -- local bookies and/or online gambling sites -- and it's never more important than when betting on the moneyline. Odds can vary wildly from one bookie or site to the next, and you should shop around for the ones giving you the best possible odds on any particular game. For instance, if you're betting 5 games on a particular day, you may want to spread those wagers over 2 Web sites and 3 local bookies, depending on who's giving the best odds on each underdog. The Goal The simple objective is to bet only on baseball underdogs that haven't lost 3 or more games in a row and are playing against favorites that haven't won 3 or more games in a row and are starting mediocre pitchers. The Rules 1) Each day, check the American and National League schedules and automatically eliminate any games in which the moneyline odds on the underdogs are greater than +150 or so. 2) Of the games that remain, eliminate any games in which the underdogs have lost 3 or more games in a row or the favorites have won 3 or more games in a row. (This information is included in almost all newspapers' daily MLB standings.) 3) Of the games that are left, eliminate any games in which the favored team's pitcher is among the Top 20 of the AL or NL in ERA, or NPERA, as determined by Jeff Sagarin(R) on USA Today's Web site (see above for a further explanation). 4) On a day with a full slate of games, you should be left with 3 to 9 games to bet on between the AL and NL. Make $20 wagers (according to our example Bankroll) on the underdog in each game, shopping around at all your favorite bookmakers for the best possible moneyline odds. 6) Before making the next day's bets, roll your profits into your Personal Betting Bankroll and increase your wagers accordingly, putting 1.25% of your Bankroll on each game. Under the Gun (and the Total) With Two Great Pitchers When betting on The Baseball Underdog System, I always incorporate a second set of plays every day on games in which both pitchers are ranked in the Top 20 in the league -- always on the "under" total set by oddsmakers. As you might expect, these "pitchers duels" often go under the total set by oddsmakers, usually somewhere between 7.5 and 9 runs.

Tonight is poker night and with the attitude I have going from that one hosing this afternoon there is definetly going to be some Brunson "make em Pay" philosophy when in races and a couple of spikes on the River for me. Liking over tonight: Texas over 9.5--agree with depleted pens NYY over 9.5--until they get stopped I am on it (hear me Pimp) hope CC is not too on tonight. STL TT over--for some reason not feeling it with Carp tonight but like STL to hit LAD, Phillies, Rockies--all on the run line, small. RSox and the over--both small--hometown momentum play and Becket at even $

Slugger--I am not busting your balls, just having some fun. It is always awsome when your luck is running great. The important thing is to realize somewhere in the middle of the run and bump it up a little to really take advantage( I know some people like to flat bet no matter what, but I like to hit it hard when things are going well and pull back when they are not). Hope you already did some of this because at 14-0, not sure how long it will last--I am rooting for you to keep it going through labor day and then have football come into play as well. Gotta admit that WSox play was all hunch, because nothing pointed to it and it had no value, but it won. I like your style and do not do all stats myself--combo of gut feel, stats, trends and momentum. Lets kick some behind tonight.

looking at 3-2 (+1 unit) on my getaway games this afternoon, that Minny game was a daggar!!! but oh well still came up, Rolling with: Phillies - R/L - 2 units - JA Happ to get it done, Philly bats to come alive after yesterdays lack of offense, Giants a bad road team. Angels M/L - 1 unit - always play the Angels as a dog, too good of an offense to stay away from that price tag. Texas R/L - 1 unit - Hunter is a stud, Richmond is a gas can!!! Rangers are rolling right now. Cards R/L - 2 units - always gotta roll with CC on the bump with Cards offense. Phillies/Giants (under 9) 1 unit - Giants a bad road team and cant score runs, only scary part is the Phillies bat come out smoking!!! GLTA Raider Nation, good Luck this year

No play on tb-bos tonight. Tonight should be a good indicator for the rest of the season for TB. If they win tonight, they are still in it....barely, if they drop the series, they might as well go get fitted for new Pings for upcoming offseason golf. Even though there are 2 good pitchers going at it tonight, would not surprise me in the least of going over total. TB tt might be worth looking at.....

Ok.. Couchola37, Im not guaranteeing any of these picks but since with my bookie I got such great prices on these games.. I picked the Marlins and the Angels ML.. Note this: Im not suggesting any of you to land units on these picks.. this is just for personal profits.. And I will not take either time into consideration for my current 14-0 MLB streak.. Port70, I go on a LONG vacation and I find you in here causing trouble! I will meet you in front of the ACC at the end of the month, (as I will be close to your border, back home for the BIG opener on the Island,) and I will throw on an old Wings Probert jersey, you can be Ti Domi, and we'll slug it out, how's that? What's up bro? I know you are going thru withdrawls for the puck to drop, but soon enough. Seriously, if you want to cross over to the Island on October 3, I can get you some good seats for Pens/Isles opening night, you just have to root for the Isles, and I will not be responsible for your well being if you go into some form of Leaf's induced trance (after firing up one of your pre-game blunt's and think your at the ACC) and start chanting "Go leafs Go!, LOL. Damn, just thought about that ratt prickk Darcy Tucker..enough.. I have to re-do my space, as I had an internal issue to work out, but EMAIL me. Hope you and the family are well.. Nugz!! What up bud, hope you finished that run way, or was it a heli-pad, that's been under construction since last year! One month to go sir, and sorry to hear about your negative units, you'll bounce back hard.
