The Dream are leaps and bounds better than the Sun. The Commissioner's Cup should make that more clear than ever.

These may be only the first days of the Commissioner’s Cup, but they will set a tone for the first chase of the WNBA season.

The Atlanta Dream have emerged as a genuine contender this season, while the Connecticut Sun look like the league’s laughingstock.

My Sun vs. Dream predictions and these WNBA picks expect the Commissioner’s Cup to emphasize those early-season realities on Tuesday, June 2.

Sun vs Dream prediction

Sun vs Dream best bet: Dream -14 (-110)

A spread this big usually scares one off, but the Commissioner’s Cup relies heavily on point differential as a tiebreaker, so suddenly lopsided results become more practical.

Then again, lopsided results are always possible when involving the Connecticut Sun. Their -15.5 net rating this season is not only worst in the WNBA, it is more than eight points per 100 possessions worse than the No. 14 net rating in the league.

Connecticut is running laps of ineptitude around everyone else.

The Atlanta Dream’s No. 2 defense should set the tone in a blowout.

Covers COVERS INTEL: Making matters worse for Connecticut, it plays at the No. 7 pace in the WNBA, moderate enough to emphasize the talent and scheme deficiencies ruining the Sun’s season.

Sun vs Dream same-game parlay

Given the Dream’s defense, there is an inclination to take an Under. Five of their seven games have gone Under their totals this season.

But in the Commissioner’s Cup, the want to run up a rout creates value in the Over. Furthermore, the tiebreaker in each conference after points differential is total points scored.

The Dream are thinking big this year. They have been ever since they acquired Angel Reese. Taking a lead in each tiebreaker fits that approach.

It should also keep Reese in the game longer than expected, though she has already cleared this modest points prop in three of her last four games.

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
