The Mercury are in for a long night trying to slow down Paige Bueckers, whose elite scoring ability is a nightmare matchup for a struggling Phoenix backcourt.

The Dallas Wings are quickly cementing themselves as legitimate WNBA contenders, while the Phoenix Mercury continue to slide backward out of the elite tier.

My Mercury vs. Wings predictions and WNBA picks for Thursday, June 11, lean heavily into this divide, aggressively fading a porous Phoenix defense at every opportunity.

Mercury vs Wings prediction

Mercury vs Wings best bet: Paige Bueckers Over 18.5 points (-130)

Paige Bueckers should shoot more. The Dallas Wings’ guard has not leaned all the way into a me-first approach, but she has taken at least 14 shots in three of her last four games. Two of those games featured 16 and 18 shots.

There is a sample-size concern, but Bueckers attempted at least 14 shots in only 24 of her 36 games last season and 16+ in only 15 of those 36.

Taking 16 shots against the Lynx on Tuesday stood out, given Minnesota features the WNBA’s best defense. An aggressive Bueckers should relish facing the Phoenix Mercury’s disjointed defense.

Covers COVERS INTEL: The greatest Mercury defensive liability is beyond the arc, where opponents have hit 38.0% of their shots this year, the highest mark in the WNBA.

Mercury vs Wings same-game parlay

The Mercury defense sets No. 11 in the WNBA in rating, but remove a win last week against the Storm — owners of the second-worst offense in the league — and that rating sits more truly around No. 13. Fading Phoenix’s defense in every way possible makes sense when considering a top-three offense in the league, a Wings’ perk that has largely flown below the radar this season.

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
