Philadelphia @ Oakland preview
RingCentral Coliseum
Last Meeting ( Oct 18, 2009 ) Philadelphia 9, Oakland 13
The honeymoon appears to be over for Chip Kelly's ballyhooed offense, but Kelly and the Philadelphia Eagles hope the return of quarterback Nick Foles will help them bounce back from back-to-back losses when they travel to Oakland on Sunday. The Raiders, meanwhile, look for another strong outing from an improving defense as they seek their third win in four games. The Raiders have won three of the past four meetings, including a 13-9 home victory in the most recent contest in 2009.
The Eagles have managed only 10 points in their past two games as rookie Matt Barkley struggled under center, but Kelly points to more than the instability at quarterback as the source of the woes. "It's not all on the quarterback, it's on all of us," Kelly told reporters. "We have to do a better job as a total group." Nonetheless, the weight might again fall on the quarterback's shoulders against an Oakland defense that ranks sixth against the run and 17th against the pass.
TV: 4:05 p.m. ET, Fox. LINE: Oakland -1. O/U: 45.5.
ABOUT THE EAGLES (3-5): Philadelphia doesn't know what it will get from Foles - the NFC Offensive Player of the Week from Week 6 or the guy who was 11-of-29 for 80 yards before leaving with a concussion a week later against Dallas. Regardless of the quarterback situation, the Eagles can lean on the NFL's leading rusher in LeSean McCoy (733 yards), though he might face tough sledding against an Oakland unit that has held three opponents under 40 yards on the ground. The defense ranks 31st against the pass but has been solid against the run, which is a favorable matchup against the run-heavy Raiders.
ABOUT THE RAIDERS (3-4): Oakland still has plenty of work to do to get back in the playoff picture, but the offense is starting to take shape thanks to dynamic dual-threat quarterback Terrelle Pryor. Pryor leads the team - and all NFL quarterbacks - with 391 rushing yards and set a franchise record with a 93-yard touchdown run in last week's 21-18 win over Pittsburgh. The secondary was carved up in a loss at Denver and a win against San Diego but has played much better the past two weeks.
EXTRA POINTS
1. The Eagles haven't been held under 10 points in three straight games since a four-game streak in 1976.
2. Philadelphia is 0-3 all-time at Oakland.
3. Raiders FS Charles Woodson needs one defensive touchdown to pass Rod Woodson and Darren Sharper for the most in NFL history.
PREDICTION: Raiders 23, Eagles 20
