Houston @ St. Louis preview

Busch Stadium

Last Meeting ( Aug 22, 2012 ) Houston 2, St. Louis 4

The host St. Louis Cardinals continue their wild-card chase and vie for the sweep of the lowly Houston Astros on Thursday afternoon behind Jake Westbrook, who just received an $8.75 million deal for next season that includes a mutual option for 2014. ''I'm super excited to get this done,” said Westbrook, who is in his second full season with St. Louis. ''It gives me peace of mind knowing I'm going to be back here (next) year.''

St. Louis is 5-3 entering the final contest of a nine-game homestand. Leadoff batter Jon Jay, who sparked the go-ahead rally in Wednesday’s 4-2 win, has three straight multi-hit games and is 8-for-18 overall. First baseman Allen Craig is riding an 11-game hitting streak.

Houston has lost six straight and 42 of its last 49. The Astros are 0-3 under interim manager Tony DeFrancesco, having been outscored 19-3 in those losses. However, All-Star second baseman Jose Altuve is 11-for-29 (.379) over his last six games.

About Units and “ROI”

Units are a standardized measurement used to determine the size of each of your bets relative to your bankroll. For example, if you have a bankroll of $200 and you bet 5% of your bankroll each time, each of your units is worth $10. A bettor with a $2000 bankroll who bets 5% per bet has units of $100. We use the number of units to standardize the amount the trend is up or down across different bet amounts.

ROI is the best indicator of success and measures how much you bet vs. how much you profited. Any positive ROI is good in sports betting with great long-term bettors sitting in the 5-7% range.
