Two of the top teams in the Eastern Conference will clash on Wednesday night, when the Columbus Crew hosts Nashville SC at Lower.com Field.

Both teams have claimed 27 points from their opening 15 matches, but the Crew have taken just three of a possible 12 in their last four matches. Getting a win won’t be easy against a Nashville side that are unbeaten in their last eight in all competitions.

My Columbus Crew vs. Nashville SC predictions and free betting picks for Wednesday, May 28, have keyed on Crew midfielder Diego Rossi as a player who will have a say in how the final result turns out.

Columbus Crew vs Nashville SC picks and predictions

My Columbus Crew vs Nashville SC best bet: Diego Rossi to score or assist (-120 at bet365)

The Columbus Crew fell 3-2 on the road this weekend at Charlotte, but Diego Rossi did nearly all he could to help get his side a result.

The Crew’s wide midfielder was a menace all match long, attempting seven shots on the day with four efforts going on target. He looked to have scored just before the hour mark as he found himself unmarked in the center of the penalty area, only to hit his effort right at the goalkeeper.

He failed to register a goal or an assist on the day, ending a four-match run with goal involvements. But he’s the most dangerous player on this Columbus side, and I’m backing him to get his 12th goal involvement of the season against Nashville SC.

Nashville have struggled on the road this season, conceding 10 of their 17 goals against in six away trips. While the return of center back Walker Zimmerman from a concussion will help shore up the back line, the absence of holding midfielder Gaston Brugman is a massive blow to their central defense.

This will help Rossi when he cuts into an inside position, as he often tends to do. Rossi has 45 shot-creating actions and five goal-creating actions already this season.

He’s also averaging better than three shots per match and 1.5 shots on target per contest. Throw in his penalty-taking duties, and you can see why he’s scored seven goals while assisting four others.

Rossi either scored or assisted in both of Columbus’ meetings with Nashville last season, despite missing a penalty in the first outing. He’s in fine form and will have an advantage against Nashville left back Daniel Lovitz, who has shown struggles against creative wide players.

I have the odds for this prop projected at -133, so the play presents value in addition to having a strong probability of success. Back the Argentine to once again be at the center of everything Columbus does in attack on Wednesday.

Columbus Crew vs Nashville SC same-game parlay (SGP)

Diego Rossi to score or assist

Hany Mukhtar 2+ shots on target

Both teams to score — Yes

Hany Mukhtar is shooting at a high rate and comes into this match having put multiple accurate efforts on frame in nine consecutive matches. Stretching that run to 10 straight will not be easy against a Columbus defense that has conceded the seventh-fewest SOT/90 this season, but with how he’s playing of late, I’m not going to bet against him.

Columbus haven’t kept a clean sheet in 10 straight matches, and have scored themselves in nine of those fixtures. Nashville have just one clean sheet in their last 10 MLS matches, and have failed to score in just one of those affairs themselves. With neither defense playing at its best, and both sides having dynamic attackers, it’s highly unlikely we see either side come away without a blemish.
