Top 3 prison movies

The Shawshank Redempton- from the Stephen King short story, Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption... brilliant

Papillon- the book was fucking awesome too.

Escape from Alcatraz

Cool Hand Luke gets an honorable mention..

What are yours?

The Great Escape

The Great Escape is a great one that I did forget about!  Steve McQueen is rockin the prison movies

1. In the Name of the Father
2. Shawshank Redemption
3. Cool Hand Luke

bad boys  sean penn/ally sheedy/clancy brown

1. In the Name of the Father

forgot all about that one. GREAT Daniel Day-Lewis, Peter Postlethwaite movie based on the trial and false conviction of "The Guildford Four" in 1975. had OODLES of Acadamy Award nominations

I would make it #2 on my list after Shawshank, The Green Mile 3rd and bump Cool Hand Luke. VERY tough call between In the Name of the Father and Shawshank for #1, though.

3) Shawshank Redemption

Hey I have never seen In the Name of the Father

Im gonna have to check this one out.... Especially if its debatable whether its better than Shawshank or not!!!

one flew over the cuckoo's nest

shaw shank

rescue dawn

green mile

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is a great movie jmitseff! Never thought of considering it a prison movie but for McMurphy I guess thats what it was!!! lol

On a side note is there any doubt that Oz is the best prison TV show??

Oz craps on any of those movies

Escape from New York with Kurt Russell aka Snake Plisken

No Escape with Ray Liotta

Me either till I saw this thread....So I downloaded a copy....Maybe it was good when it was first made but.....I was so bored an hour in I just kept zipping it ahead to see if there was anything to keep my attention.....Nothing.

That movie is nowhere near Shawshank.

As far as prison-related movies go.....The Dirty Dozen could be added to the list above.

Tango and Cash was entertaining for it's time.

Sleepers

IF you are going to consider movies with a "prison theme" or where part of the plot thaks place in a prison like One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Sleepers (EXCELLENT movie btw), then I guess you have to throw in Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon too.

Shawshank Redemption has to be the winner here no doubt...

Shawshank Redemption

Hey I love all the input!  I also enjoyed Sleepers but the ending kind of dragged on a little bit.

Silence of the Lambs kicked ass!  I didn't know it but Hannibla Lector was only on screen for about 12 minutes in that movie!!

The Dirty Dozen is old school but it was pretty damn good!

Papillon was the one of the greatest movies ever made.

1.) Cool Hand Luke

2.) Shawshank Redemption

3.)Midnight Express

I have no opinion on his politics but there is a prison movie called 'Hunger' about IRA member Bobby Sands that came out a few years ago. Good movie.

MIDNIGHT EXPRESS (1978)
DEAD MAN WALKING (1995)
THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION (1994)
