Hard to bet against Dempster since he dominates at home and after the Cubs coming off an PITIFUL loss last night..Cubs typically play really well vs Cards at home too...
Just scares me that you dont know what to expect out of Carpenter since hes still pretty fresh off the DL..

With Carpenter still fresh of the DL and only making a few starts after major surgery I'm still a little hesitant about him. The cub hitters need to be patient and make him throw pitches because I don't think the Cards want him going deep too soon. The cubs need to get inside that Cardinal bullpen. If Carpenter only goes five innings against a very strong lineup that bullpen is gonna step in.

if you were setting the odds at a vegas sportsbook and you thought the cubs were going to win tonight why would you give a line of -135 on a pitcher who is 10-2 with 2.77 era at home?

Because of the opposing pitcher's considerable reputation.

the opposing starting pitcher that has two starts this year and in those two starts has yet to pitch more then 5 innings or throw more then 67 pitches.

sean2114, yeah, you know that and I know that but we're a pair of baseball betting geniuses, obviously. But the tens of thousands of casual lemon bettors still think of Chris Carpenter as, you know, "Chris Carpenter."

If you're willing to throw out the ugly 3-game sweep the Cubs suffered at U.S. Cellular Field against the White Sox in late June, the Cubs are 13-0 this season following a loss where they gave up at least 6 runs.

Throwing out the Cubs first two home games of the 2008 season (where they had a day off in between), the Cubs are 10-1 this season at home off a home loss. The only slip-up was a pair of 3-2 losses to the Marlins two weeks ago. Of those 10 wins, only one of them was by one run, which I why I'm placing most of my Cubs wager tonight on the runline at +160.

i was at the braves game when carpenter came off the dl. he looked good. nobody on either team has any knockout numbers against either starter. dlee .355 0hr, 2 rbi in 31ABs are the strongest #s for any hitter. i may lean towards an under play for the 1st 5, but would have to do some checking on the weather..and 3.5 just seems easy to do with these lineups.

The Cubs have lost 8 games this season that were started by Ryan Dempster, whether he figured in the decision or not. The Cubs have won by scores of 19-5, 7-2, 3-1, 7-1, 6-5, 9-0, and 7-2 in the games started by Dempster the next time out.
Dempster took the 2-0 loss at Wrigley last Monday in that rain-shortened game.
