    Hey everyone ,

Format got messed up in the first post ...so let's try again ...

I will start a Trends & things thread for the regular season on a weekly basis in which posters can contribute with insightful information.
I will  to continue to make a selection(s)  based on trends
alone and this weekly pick will continue to be an underdog.
These proved to be successful last year and it makes sense to give it another run .
The general idea is to narrow down the strongest side based purely on  trends while narrowing the field to Dogs only .
Underdog Trend picks last year ended up at 12-2-1 for pre-season and regular season .
These selections were only made through week 8 .
I will try to run these Underdog Trend picks throughout the entire year for 2008-2009
If 55 % or above is achieved , then the run continues to the following year .

If anything else , these can serve as useful information to some
    viewers.
Do not follow these picks blindly , nor is there a point in arguing at least on this thread  with comments such as :
the quarterback is hurt or the defensive line is much too strong ...

The idea on the Trends & Things thread is to argue over which is the superior trend or associating a trend with its significance  it may have on a particular matchup .
In some cases a trend may point to a team's dominace over another which defies logic.
In another case , a trend may show how poorly a team performs after not running the ball well
In yet another case , a trend may reflect how well a team bounces back from a loss
It may point out how well a team performs on the road or against non-divisional opponents .
The simpler and more straightforward a trend is , the better it is  IMHO
The more variables are introduced the more difficult it is to assess its merit .
Super systems are an example of too many variables involved, and I do not personally place as much value in them .

When you start talking about team A being 15-0 when playing a non-divisional opponent  after a SU win of more than 10 points on back to back home games if opponent is coming off a SU  & ATS loss prior game ....you lost me !
    You get the point ...

Lets ' s look at the trend riding against Super Bowl losers on week 1  last 10 years
I see the number 0-9 last 9 seasons thrown around ..so let's see what we got >>>
    Super Bowl losers :

    2007-2008  Chicago + 6 @ SD ........?
    2006-2007 Seattle - 6 @ Detroit .....        W  9-6 .....ATS .....    L
    2005-2006 Philadelphia -1.5 @ Atlanta....L 10-14 .....ATS ..... L
    2004-2005 Carolina -3 vs Green Bay ...   .L 14-24.....ATS ....... L
    2003-2004 Oakland + 3 @ Tennessee ....L 20-25....ATS......    L
    2002 -2003 St Louis -3 @ Denver .....      L 20-31.....ATS ........ L
    2001-2002 NY Giants + 7 @ Denver ....   L 20-31.....ATS .......  L
    2000-2001 Tenneesee -1 @ Buffalo .....    L 13-16.......ATS......L

    1999-2000 Atlanta + 4 vs Minnesota .....L 14-17.....ATS.......  W
    1998-1999 Green Bay - 9 vs Detroit ......W....38-19....ATS..... W

So if i did this right ....the correct numbers are
Super Bowl losers are on a current 0-7 ATS streak  week 1
following their defeat in the Super bowl ...

    *******************************************************
    You get the idea ...
These were all examples of PAST trends highlighted in the past !

My personal picks will not made in Trends @ things threads ...

    Back to 2008 NFL pre-season !

This week One of the strongest trend selections that  I see is the following :

Game : Cleveland @ NY Giants Monday August 18

    Monday night pre-season Dogs are 33-17- 2 ( over 60 % ! ) ATS since 1993

Though the  NY Giants are 6-3 ATS @ home last 9 home pre-season games the most important trend is clearly the following >>>

Defending SB champions are only 1-15 ATS on week 2 as Favorites

Under  Romeo Crennel , Cleveland has gone 9-3 ATS , actually 9-4 ATS including last week's loss to the NY Jets , but Romeo Crennel did bring his winning atttitude from New England during pre-season.

Results from last 4 years on week 2 for the last  4 SB champs >>

    Chi @ Indi L 24-27 P + 3

    Minn @ pitt L 10-17 L - 3.5

    NO @ NE L 27-37 L - 3.5

    NE @ Cinci L 3-31 L - 4

Reminding ourselves of how strong MNF Dogs have been over the last 15 years , combined with how poorly the Super Bowl winners have performed as favorites  on Week 2 of the pre-season this Cleveland team as a dog seems to be the right selection as the Underdog Trend of the week and the first such pick of this NFL season !

    To summarize ...
Game : Cleveland @ NY Giants
current line : NY Giants -2 to -3

Underdog Trend pick of the Week : Cleveland + the points

    UTPW 2008-2009 record : 0-0

To determine the actual record of such picks this year
the actual lines used will be drawn here from Covers ...
On NFL Scores & Matchups the line used there will determine a win. draw, or a loss

    From the Playbook >>>

Gary Kubiak is 5-3 SU & 5-1 ATS in pre-season
    while 3-2 SU & 4-1 ATS as a dog in pre-season

Houston prior to Gary Kubiak's arrival were 3-14 SU & 4-13 ATS
This involves a  favorable short term trend over a very negative
    long term trend .
But the change in coaching seems to have reversed that long tern trend ...

Then you have the Saints record of futility as they are 1-9 SU and 0-10 ATS in Home openers.
NO is 2-11 SU and 1-12 ATS as favorites in pre-season .
Sean Payton is 5-5 SU & ATS, including 0-2 SU & ATS in pre-season as a favorite

    Game : Houston @ NO
    current line : NO  -3 / -3.5
    Trends favor ...
    Houston + the points

NFL Preseason Research: prior year records
    1. Home underdogs are 77-49 (61%)
    2. Home teams off less than 10 win years as favorites against prior year Good teams are just 32-54 (37%)
    3. Home underdogs versus a "non prior year Good team" are 38-20 (66%)
    4. In week two, POOR prior season teams are an amazing 25-9 (74%) as away teams facing GOOD or AVERAGE prior year home teams, and POOR teams are also 31-23 as home teams.

NFL Preseason research: Won-Lost records coming in

    5. Back an away team with two or more wins against a home team with exactly one win (41-17 for 71%)
    6. In a game of winless sides, lean to the underdog (38-21 after week one).
    7. Home underdogs with 0 or 2+ wins are 55-25 (69%)
    8. Away underdogs with 0 or 2+ wins are 197-140 (58%)
    9. In week two, underdogs with zero wins are 50-24 (68%)

This pre-season Dogs have  come out really strong and going with covers lines and not counting the only line  that was 0 ...so far this pre-season .
These numbers will much depend on your given lines !
Dogs have the edge 10-6-2 ATS ( check my math )
while the Overs are leading 9-7-1 .
this includes HOF game and Thursday's action ...

As for tonight's game the glaring stats are the following :
Oakland is 3-14-1 ATS past 18 pre-season games on the road while the Titans are 1-5 ATS past 6 pre-season games at home . ( according to BETUS magazine )

Under is 10-3 in Oakland games last 13 pre-season games .

    Roberto,

Isnt this oakland trend the complete opposite of the two minute warning trend for the oakland game tonight?

    That is correct ...
I can't play on a 3-14-1 ATS pre-season team unless I see a trend reversal such as might be case with the Hou-No game
You can aslo simply stick with the two minute warning selections , though the Oak pick carries only one strategy ( # 4 )

    A quick note on tonight's games >>

UNDER is 8-2 past 10 Cincy preseason games @ home
TB is 6-2-1 ATS past 9 preseason games @ home while NE is
0-4 SU last 4 games vs TB
Dogs had a field day on Saturday and the Overs are ahead of the norm this pre-season ...
    Got to get going ...
    Enjoy the games !

Robert Flory filters out the meaningless "trends", and gives us the best ones, IMO.  Thanks again Robert!
