If you are rich it is okay to steal from the poor. Why? Because poor people dont have any real power, no knowledge, they dont understand how rich rob them. But even if they do know, they cant do anything about it. If you criticize super rich, you suddenly become - classist, conspiracy theorist, or just an uneducated fool who doesn't have degree in economics.

There are 442 billionaires in the US.
Why doesn't Obama just drone them and confiscate their money and stop catching us in the middle class in the crossfire?

If he was really against these people he would not have enriched them with corporate handouts from the bailouts etc.

    Amen!

Maybe trickle down can work by droning them all and then giving it to the people that really need it.

where in that article does it say that the rich stole from the poor?

It's counter intuitive to say the rich stole from the poor in order to quadruple their wealth.

They are called poor for a reason, they don't have assets
What do you steal from them that makes you more wealthy?

I suggest the rich quadruple wealth by investing in themselves and other rich people.

    Stiln,

can we agree that attempting to confiscate wealth from these 442 individuals, will ultimately result in some dude that makes 250K getting boned?

250K is rich by my measure, but I think that maybe someday I could get there.  That is why I am not super stoked on treating the guy that makes 250K the same as Warren Buffett who gets to be the beneficiary of Government Bailout after government bailout.

How about a 99% tax on those who get rich selling F-16s to Egypt, and the politicians that make it happen.

How about a 100% tax on campaign money at the end of every election cycle.

Why does it always come down to hating people who could potentially actually be providing services, products, and jobs to their communities?

I think that is the big disconnect we are talking about here.

Obama is just as much in bed as any president before him.  Just because he pays lip service to the " 99%"  does not mean spit to me.

Well the easiest way to evaluate the economy is this...

How much have incomes gone up versus corporate profits?

Obama has nothing to do with it, the issue is corporations are gaining while not paying out much more in salaries, the expansion of the high income vs low income chasm is increasing and will continue.

Here I thought the GDP was the easiest marker to evaluate the US economy. GDP economic growth would add jobs,,there by reducing much of the poverty.

Maybe on face value it looks like President Obama has nothing to do with it. But,he does have a lot to do with influencing Democrats in Congress.. and Congress can do things, that can help the economy grow..

In fact just last week Bernanke said, that Congress could do more to help the U.S. economy ...if Obama would stop pitting the two party's against each other everytime he gives a speech and encourage less division..it would go a loooog way to growing this anemic economic recovery ..

Villemure30 is right that the rich mostly deserve their wealth whether by sacrifice or inheritance..  The problem is that the poor hasn't done as well in recent decades.  Too many poor people isn't beneficial for any country.  Redistributing income is one of the jobs of government.

Barack Obama says top 1 percent saw incomes quadruple, while typical family saw theirs barely budge

A reader asked us to check a dramatic statistic on income inequality from President Barack Obama’s recent speech on the economy in Galesburg, Ill.

"The income of the top 1 percent nearly quadrupled from 1979 to 2007, but the typical family’s incomes barely budged," Obama said in the July 24, 2013, speech.

When we asked the White House for supporting evidence, a spokesman pointed us to a study published in late 2011 by the Congressional Budget Office, the nonpartisan budget-analysis arm of Congress.

The study looked at income trends between 1979 and 2007 for various income levels, including the top 1 percent.

CBO found that over that period, the top 1 percent’s inflation-adjusted, after-tax income rose by a cumulative 275 percent. Over 28 years, that averages to almost a 10 percent increase each year.

That’s not quite quadrupling -- a 300 percent increase would have been a quadrupling -- but Obama did say "nearly quadrupled," and we think that qualifies.

As for Obama’s claim that the "typical family’s incomes barely budged," that seems on target, too.

For the 60 percent of the population in the middle of the income scale -- that is, excluding the top one-fifth and the bottom one-fifth of earners -- the cumulative growth in inflation-adjusted, after-tax household income was just under 40 percent. That may sound like a healthy increase, but it actually averages to just 1.4 percent per year.

While an income increase of 1.4 percent a year above inflation does mean the middle 60 percent advanced economically during the period studied, the increase was only about one-seventh as fast as it was for the top 1 percent. In this context, we think the description "barely budged" is reasonable.

We should point out that the CBO’s findings about the top 1 percent were a little different than the conclusions we drew in a previous fact-check. But there’s a good reason why.

We calculated that income for the top 1 percent grew between 1979 and 2008 by 169 percent, well below the 275 percent the CBO found. Our calculation was based on data compiled by economists Thomas Piketty and Emmanuel Saez, who are specialists in income inequality.

However, the Piketty-Saez data set excluded capital gains. Capital gains refers to income earned from investments such as stocks, and the lion's share of the nation’s capital gains go to the very wealthy. The CBO data, unlike the data from Piketty and Saez, included capital gains income, so that explains the discrepancy.

    Our ruling

Obama said "the income of the top 1 percent nearly quadrupled from 1979 to 2007, but the typical family’s incomes barely budged." Calculations by the CBO, a highly credible agency, show an increase of 275 percent for the top 1 percent, which is pretty close to quadrupling. And for average households, income rose by comparatively modest amounts. We rate the claim True

Yeah I do think the one problem with the Obama administration was that he set the bar at 250k I thought 500k might have been more appropriate.

     Thats 9x

While the rich 4x from 1979 to 2007
( all Republican presidents except for Bill Clinton for 6 of 8 years had Republicans in Congress , balancing budget )

Certainly the country prospered overall from 79 - 2007 so would make sense that the rich also got richer, but the last 6 years have been rough on everybody except for the POTUS it seems.

I wish he would let us in on his investments I think we could all use 9 times our wealth

    Good post

the dollar amount alone won't do any good without closing the loop holes.

also a set number across the board is unfair because $500,000 in New York City does not go as far as $500, 000 in Bugtussle

Another way to evaluate the economy....80% of adults in America struggle with joblessness, near poverty or reliance on welfare for at least parts of their lives a sign of deteriorating economic security (AP)

..and 75% of Americans don’t have enough money saved to pay their bills for six months and 25% of them have no reserves to draw on in case of emergency.

Whats the economic agenda for our leader ( who lost our AAA credit rating on his watch )" We need to be talking about,
rebuilding our manufacturing base, educating our workforce.
upgrading our transportation ( more shovel ready stuff) and information networks."

We've got to make sure we're building sources of energy for the future, not just thinking about next year, but 10 years from now, 20 years from now,"......"That's why we've invested in solar and wind power, biofuels and energy-efficient cars."

That's good vision for future, but what about now?

Obama's answer to our economic problems right now ..is windmills and getting the wealthy to pay more taxes,so we can spend more and forcing Americans to purchase health insurance..

Sounds like a plan .. .............for a third world country.

The issue of unemployment isnt at all the burden of the government SS..

Coming from someone who is anti-socialism, how would you think it is the responsibility of the government to force corporations to hire more?

Even though you tossed the shot out there, the question still stands..

Are corporate profits at a multi decade low LIKE the poverty issues and similar to the dearth of wage and salary increases, or are corporate profits near all time highs?

If corporate profits are at all time highs, stock market at all time highs..why are corporations not hiring more and why are they holding off expanding?

The reason has absolutely nothing to do with the government..

Why arent corporations hiring more may be a sign of Technology.

Something as simple as EZ Pass eliminates told collectors.
self checkout in food stores eliminates cashiers.
    ATMs eliminate tellers.

Not the fault of companies but convenience for consumers also can lead to unemployment so it is a double edged sword

Between automation and online ordering, many workers are no longer needed

The production aspect of product creation never goes away..corporations have shifted a ton of production offshore..or they play "chase the state tax deal" and pit states against each other to win the luxurious right to give freebies to corporations who cannot send production to China..

    Thats all true too

So the answer might be for the United States to compete.

Competition in the form of incentives here that rival overseas

I mean tax breaks not hourly wages of course.

And since capitalism is all about competition it makes sense that corporations shop for the lowest rates.

corporations should go to states that have lower tax rates.
    They are acting responsible.

    Like us the everyday Joe,
going to the gas station with the lowest price, food market with the lowest prices, lowest mortgage rate.

States like Cali, NY, Illinois have priced themselves out of the market.

I did not say that it was the responsibility of Gov. to force corps to hire ...if fact because of Obamanomics they are sitting on trillions in cash ..so why should they hire..

In a healthy economy, small businesses create 75% of net new jobs..and they are not hiring because of the unknown impact of Obamacare and the regulations his administration is putting on them..plus they don't see a real recovery in Obamas' agenda ..this creates fear so hiring has become stagnant...

Instead of the Gov. giving money to large corps to give back to Obama through lobbing and campaign contributions to democrat causes ...His administration should be focusing on helping out small businesses and ridding them of uncertainty..

As I said in post #8 ...Obama has a lot to do with influencing Democrats in Congress.. and Congress can do things, that can help the economy grow..But he's not doing it ..he's causing division in Congress ,who are the ones that can do things to help the economy..

Heres how good Obama's economy recovery is going ..a friend of mine just returned from a visit to Disney World...and the place was packed...

The one thing that he noticed was almost everyone there was speaking a foreign language..because Americans can't afford to go there..

The one thing that he noticed was almost everyone there was speaking a foreign language..because Americans can't afford to go there..
