LOCK THREAD CONCEPT - This thread is for all of us to share our expertise with everyone else to benefit the group.

THIS IS NOT A PICKING CONTEST!

PLEASE make special note of this! If you have an area of expertise, please make some LOCK choices from your area of expertise when you have a game you are confident enough in to call it a "LOCK". The difference between a PICK and a LOCK is that a PICK is a game you like, a LOCK is a game that you KNOW. If you are claiming your choice is a LOCK, and you really have NO true knowledge of that game, then you are just cheating us and posting your PICK just for attention and to see your name on the board.

RULES FOR POSTING - We will not track your LOCK if you do not follow these rules. You are welcome to still post your PICK or card, but unless you do the things below, we won't be putting your LOCK on the spreadsheet.

Only 1 LOCK per day and a MAXIMUM of 4 LOCKS per week.

A week starts on Mon and ends on Sun.  You do not have to stay in one sport.

    - No buying points for LOCKS.

    - No other "line-manipulations: like teasers, etc.

    - No parlays

    - No props

    - LOCKS need to be -129 or lower.  Anything -130 and over, take the -1.5 goals or runs if you feel like it is still a LOCK.

    - Do not try to cheat on lines. We, as a group, are all over the lines and every time someone gives a stinky spread, it is always called out. If the line is off, the LOCK doesn't go into the spreadsheet.

    AND THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE!

You must give an ORIGINAL explanation as to why you KNOW this LOCK will win. And don't just "stat" us to death. Tell us about the game. DO NOT COPY YOUR WRITE-UPS! People on this thread are all over the internet and will find your plagiarism. I guarantee it. You can use Last 10, ATS, etc., numbers to support your argument, but stats from a gambling website are not an explanation.

FOLLOW THESE RULES AND YOUR LOCK WILL GET TRACKED

Thank you for your understanding and your help in keeping this thread for the benefit of everybody, not just a place for you to blather out random picks and toot your own horn.

    Holmey~

Daymn, man, you sure as sh*t got something going great here, bro.

I was right about you being a "good bro."

You care about others, are articulate in the boards, write very well and are good at communications in the boards. Smooth and suave.

    Amazing.
"Not trying to be a hardass but it takes a while to get everyone on the same page."
Well, managing people in boards -- or anything else online -- is like trying to herd cats. Ever try that? Chaos.

I've managed a team of people working online from all over the world, and let me tell you, it's like herding cats.

So, many props for you to start this up and to keep it going.

Getting a good team of volunteer "moderators" to help you manage this system might be a good idea -- lessen the burden on you and spread the work load a bit.

There seems to be enough veterans from the CBS days to be able to volunteer to help the OP manage these "Lock" threads.

I also hate the idiotic 7,800-character limit in Covers, sheesh. The limit should go up.

Now, this limit is one Under bet (Under 7,800 characters for those who didn't get the joke) that's guaranteed to win, eh?

Somebody said "L-word", and I'm, like,  ... I was thinking of the "L-Word", as in lesbians in that TV series (HBO, was it?) ... a lotta hot babes there.

Thanks Mozart!  I appreciate the kind words.

When I started the thread over on CBS at the end of 2006, it was like the wild west over there.  The Mods BARELY did anything, so it was just constant BS and ripping on each other.  You do need to keep it positive and, you can ask the old schoolers, if you ignore the haters and trolls, as a group, you can really get something done.  Once the stats start to separate themselves out and people understand who are the ones to tail, this thread can really start working.  The first year we had 6 or 7 LOCKers who were like 23-7 or better on their LOCKS and once people figured out who to tail, it was almost impossible to not win money.

We'll see if we can get it going over here, but I can attest that the concept DOES work, as long as everyone works together.  I will always say that even the most ordinary capper can hit around 60% if they are selective and understand the concept of a LOCK vs. a normal play.  4 LOCKS per week makes everyone very selective.

Thanks for hopping on board and glad to have you here.  Best of luck!

And I do know how hard it is to manage a group on boards, especially public boards where anyone can post anything.  Its a test of patience for sure.  Hoping I still have that patience!

    LOCK STANDINGS

I will post the LOCK Standings almost every day as long as the thread is going.  Only had two trackable LOCKS posted yesterday:

    1-0 - magiccarpetride
    0-1 - forty9ersfan80

There was another winner posted, but it wasn't within the LOCK-tracking rules.  Again, this is fine to post your plays, but if you want your LOCKS tracked, you need to post them with an original explanation as to why you KNOW your LOCK will win.

Thanks and good luck. Many more games to choose from and a lot more from larger conferences.  Let's LOCK some winners today!

    Holmey~

Thanks for the positive response on your part.

I'll do my best to not clutter up the lock threads with non-lock-related posts, but I do want to offer some substance in other ways that can be useful.

Your (Holmey) improvement of the rules OP is a great one, BTW. Much easier to read.

    .

    One small suggestion:

In the thread titles of each day, I suggest that you also type in the day of the week, i.e., "Mon", "Tues", and set them off with characters, like, "~~Mon~~", "~~Tues~~", etc.

I have found those wavy characters to be quite useful in isolating certain words/terms in titles. In the case of Covers' threads, the day of the week would be the first word that a reader would read, then one could proceed to click on that thread once they determine that it's the right day of the week to click on it.

A lot of times people would still be commenting on the thread from the day before, so you would have two, or more, lock threads going at the same time, so then one would have to look for the exact number of the day to determine the click-ability of a thread.

Hence my "small" suggestion that can go a long ways in helping others to find the right threads.

    .

    About Covers' Clowns

For all the years that I've been here in Covers, in every single thread that had been started by some capper going on a good run, when there are the inevitable losses, the "Covers Clowns", as I call them, come out of the woodwork and dump their negative sh*t in the threads.

Post after post after post of Covers Clowns attacking the OP, attacking each other, tearing each other down with name-calling, insults, etc.

It's just awful to wade through that sh*t.

I don't want that crap to happen in this thread, so we will need to figure out a way to keep the Covers Clowns from dumping their negativity in these lock threads.

Auburn +7.5. Bowers back from 1 game suspension is big, and Pearl will have the Tigers ready after laying an egg at home against Okie State. LSU just 2-4 on the road and shouldn't be favoured by that much against a half-decent team.

Hey guys  Please read the OP about what LOCKS I will track and what PICK I won't.  If you want your LOCKS to be tracked, make sure you have an original writeup explaining your LOCK.  Please don't just post your favorite play of the day.  Post your LOCK and tell us why you KNOW it will win.

    Thanks and good luck!

Again, if you want your LOCK tracked, please make sure to post only 1 and make sure it has an original write up.  Posting whatever picks you want to is fine, but if you want them tracked, PLEASE read the first post on the thread to see the format.  The perfect format was posted by forty9erfan80 on the Monday thread.

Always make sure you prominently include the word LOCK in your post also!

That's a great idea about putting the day of the week in the thread title, Mozart.  I actually used to do that over on CBS, but I had forgotten about that.  Thanks!

Great idea USC. Straightwagers told me a lot about the CBS Lock thread from years ago and he loved it.. Looking forward to this.

You might find it hard though for people to follow your rules. StraightWagers, myself and Slon are handling a NBA contest similar to this right now and we ask for write-ups as to why people like their plays and I think around 10% of those who post actually put a write-up.

Thanks Aussie!  I remember StraightWager.  He was around on CBS for a long time.

Thanks for the heads up.  I know everyone won't do write ups, but, whoa, 10% is really low!  It's fine if people post without a write up, but I just won't track the picks.  If it doesn't work, it doesn't work.  I'm just giving it a shot over here and no harm done if it fails.

Thanks for stopping by and hope you can contribute with a LOCK or two at some point!

Also, guys, I am still trying to get comfortable with the boards here on Covers.  If I am missing anything or doing anything wrong, please call it to my attention.

    Thanks and good luck today!

    My 1st Lock:

    Clemson -1
Better than Wake Forest on both sides of the ball statistically (Adjusted D and O per 100 possessions).  Have been outstanding ATS in conference at 8-1 (Outright wins vs Duke and Pitt).  If this turns out to be a  close game Clemson shoots great from the line and most importantly this team has a lot of fight and are very scrappy.  Every loose ball you see at least two Tigers on the floor.

Also, glad to see that you are waiting for lineups to post your LOCK.  Its kind of hard for me to believe that there can be a soccer LOCK without knowing what players they are putting out there for the game.

    New Mexico -3

New Mexico SU 14-1 at THE PIT! Only lost to Wyoming when leading scorer Elijah Brown (avg 20.3) was benched until the 9:00 minute mark of 1st half for missing curfew in previous game. Bad karma and doomed prior to tip off because of this distraction!!  New Mexico has a very balanced attack as two of their top four scorers haven't attempted a 3 ball. Shoot FT's at a 73% clip which can't hurt in tight games. Now they did LOSE to UNLV on the road by 12 but that was in the debut of new coach Todd Simon (UNLV WAS UP FOR THIS GAME).  UNLV has settled since losing 2 of last 3 conference games and are 1-3 SU within conference on the road.  The honeymoon period is done for coach Simon!!  UNLV going down like a three dollar person!!

I love the EPL and follow most of the major Euro leagues.  Interestingly enough, I never wagered on soccer until the CBS guys got me into it.  Been a process over the years, but I feel I've been improving steadily, and learned that being selective is key, since there are so many leagues and competitions to pick from.  I'll dabble in a variety of leagues when it comes to wagering, but mostly stick to England (EPL and ECL).

I support Tottenham and anyone playing Arsenal or Man U.  I have a soft spot for AFC Bournemouth, since they were a cash cow last season in the ECL.  I always like to root for most of the newly promoted teams to stay up.  My sports rooting interests have become very fluid over the years, but Spurs are my team.  I hope they can stay up in the top 4, and maybe make a run at it.  Although if City stay healthy, I think they are the team to beat.
