The Winnipeg Jets sitting in the NHL basement on New Year’s Eve wasn’t on many bingo cards after they won the Presidents’ Trophy last season, and the Detroit Red Wings sitting in top spot in the Atlantic Division was just as rare.

Little Caesars Arena will play host to the two teams Wednesday, December 31, and my top Jets vs. Red Wings predictions and NHL picks are headlined by Winnipeg star Mark Scheifele.

Jets vs Red Wings prediction

Jets vs Red Wings best bet: Mark Scheifele Over 0.5 assists (-105)

Winnipeg Jets center Mark Scheifele has ticked the assists column in eight of his past 14 games for 10 total helpers, and he’s up to 27 apples across 37 games for the campaign.

The go-to center also sports a high-end 2.11 assists per 60 minutes and has long-standing chemistry with linemates Kyle Connor and Gabriel Vilardi. Schiefele and the wingers have clicked for an impressive 5.28 goals per 60 this season and have jumped the boards for an average 15:48 ice time per game since the beginning of last season.

Even with the Detroit Red Wings sitting atop the Atlantic Division, this isn’t the scariest matchup, either.

Detroit ranks below average in both goals against per game and goals against per 60 at 5-on-5, and the Red Wings have surrendered the ninth-most expected goals per 60 at 5-on-5.

Look for Scheifele to ring in the new year with a helper before the clock strikes midnight.

Jets vs Red Wings same-game parlay

Winnipeg has only lost by more than a goal once during its active six-game losing streak, and the Under has hit in four of those six. I’m also expecting Jets star Connor Hellebuyck to begin turning the corner in the crease.

Hellebuyck turned away 18 of 20 shots last time out against a powerful Edmonton Oilers offense, and screaming statistical correction remains ahead of his .893 SV% across seven starts since returning from his knee injury.

There have already been signs, with the back-to-back Vezina winner posting a rock-solid 5.24 goals saved above expected during the highlighted seven-game stretch.
