The Washington Capitals didn’t have an answer for the visiting Carolina Hurricanes in Game 1, and the two teams hit the ice again at Capital One Arena on Thursday, May 8.

Here are my top Hurricanes vs. Capitals props and NHL picks for tonight’s second-round showdown.

Best Hurricanes vs Capitals props

  • Red Wings Svechnikov o2.5 shots (-128)
  • Red Wings Wilson u0.5 points (+100)
  • Red Wings Andersen u2.5 goals against (-118)

Hurricanes vs Capitals player props for May 8

Andrei Svechnikov Over 2.5 shots (-128 at Sports Interaction)

Andrei Svechnikov finished with three shots on 11 attempts in Game 1, and he’s pacing the Carolina Hurricanes in both with 25 shots and 55 attempts through six postseason games. The go-to winger also ranks in the 97th percentile of forwards in shots on goal during the playoffs.

Washington has allowed a healthy 30.2 shots per game and has dropped to a 41.6 Corsi For percentage at 5-on-5 after posting a disastrous 24% mark against Carolina in Game 1.

Svechnikov has also clicked with linemates Sebastian Aho and Jackson Blake for a monster 73.3 CF% at 5-on-5 during the postseason, and the Russian winger is also a go-to shooter on the No. 1 power-play unit.

Tom Wilson Under 0.5 points (+100s at Sports Interaction)

Tom Wilson only registered a single shot on two attempts and was on the ice for just 1.3 expected goals in Game 1. The 5-on-5 numbers were even worse with the power forward finishing with a 13.5 Corsi For percentage and 19.3 expected goals percentage.

The Hurricanes are a daunting matchup. They topped the NHL with a 59.2 CF% and 56.0 xGF% at 5-on-5 while also topping the league with an 83.6 penalty-kill percentage during the regular season.

Goals will be tough to come by for the Capitals in Round 2, and Wilson certainly didn’t impress in the series opener.

Frederik Andersen Under 2.5 goals against (-118 at Sports Interaction)

The Hurricanes held the Washington Capitals in check in Game 1. Washington lost 2-1 and could only generate 1.31 expected goals at 5-on-5 and 2.29 overall. The Caps also lost possession with a minuscule 24.0 Corsi For percentage at 5-on-5.

Hurricanes No. 1 Frederik Andersen has also been running hot with a postseason-high .935 save percentage and 8.42 goals saved above expected through five games. He’s only allowed seven goals.

I expect more pushback from Washington in Game 2, but the Caps finished the regular season with a league-leading 10.7 team shooting percentage at 5-on-5, and they’re already down to a 9.8% mark during the playoffs. As highlighted, Carolina is a matchup nightmare in front of Andersen, too.
