Capitals vs Stars Best bet: Over 5.5 (-130)
No team in hockey is generating more high-danger scoring chances than the Washington Capitals, which explains their recent trend of high-scoring games. Entering this matchup, Washington ranks first in expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60), but the Dallas Stars aren’t far behind, ranking second in that category.
As dangerous as each team is offensively, the same can’t be said about their defensive play.
This season, both rank in the bottom half of the league in expected goals against per 60 minutes (xGA/60). That leaves goaltending as the main reason this game’s total is set as low as 5.5.
Logan Thompson could very well become a Vezina Trophy candidate again this season. He finished fourth in last year’s voting and has picked up right where he left off.
That said, Dallas has the offensive firepower to sneak a couple past a goaltender who has yet to record a shutout this season. On the other end, Jake Oettinger is slated to start for the Stars and carries a sub-.900 save percentage (SV%) this year.
