Capitals vs Canadiens prediction

Capitals vs Canadiens Best bet: Sam Montembeault Over 22.5 saves (-125)

It’s been a tough start to the season for Montreal Canadiens goalie Sam Montembeault

He’s sporting a discouraging .858 save percentage and 3.56 GAA with -6.43 goals saved above expected through 11 appearances, and I’m anticipating improved play moving forward.

Montembeault put up a .902 SV% across 143 games over the previous three seasons, and last year his 29.62 goals saved above expected ranked fourth in the NHL, after all.

The Washington Capitals are positioned to generate enough shots for Montembeault to clear this save total, too.

Washington is ninth in shots per game (29.3) and shows off with a fourth-ranked 54.1 Corsi For percentage at 5-on-5.

Capitals vs Canadiens same-game parlay

The Habs draw the Caps on the second leg of a back-to-back set with travel, and Montreal is ripe to kick the losing skid and return to the wins column. A big part of turning the corner tonight will be Montembeault standing tall, too.

Turning to the third leg of this SGP, Montreal rookie Ivan Demidov has 10 assists through 19 games while skating in a top-six role and jumping the boards with the No. 1 power-play unit. The Caps sport a 28th-ranked 72.3 penalty-kill percentage, too.

Additionally, while hard to quantify, Demidov could also have an extra pep in his step facing off against countryman Alex Ovechkin on Thursday night after the Caps took out the Canadiens in the opening round of the playoffs last spring.
