Offenses were cold to start the season last night, and we'll see more of the same in Washington tonight.

We didn’t see much offense on opening night of the NHL season, with all three games featuring five goals or fewer.

My Bruins vs. Capitals predictions rely on that trend continuing as the offenses take some time to get in sync. Here are my top NHL picks for October 8.

Bruins vs Capitals prediction

Bruins vs Capitals Best bet: Under 5.5 (-105)

The Boston Bruins and Washington Capitals typically play relatively low-scoring games, especially against each other. Five of the past six head-to-head meetings have gone Under the number; the lone exception was the series finale last year.

Logan Thompson didn’t start that game for the Capitals, and backup Charlie Lindgren struggled in his place, conceding three times on 24 shots.

We should expect quality goaltending tonight. Thompson was one of the league’s best netminders last year and is ready to pick up where he left off after posting a .929 SV%.

With contract negotiations well behind him and a full camp to prepare for the season, Jeremy Swayman looks poised to rebound and hit the ground running for the Bruins.

It’s possible — perhaps even likely — this matchup features a pair of Top-10 goaltenders for the coming season.

The Bruins really lack firepower beyond David Pastrnak, and it may take some time to adjust to the systems of new head coach Marco Sturm.

They’ll no doubt be looking to dumb the game down and suck the life out of it, which should make for a low-scoring contest.

Bruins vs Capitals same-game parlay

Tom Wilson recorded multiple shots in 67% of his home games last season, a far cry from his 49% hit rate on the road. He averaged 1.1 more attempts per game in Washington, so it’s not just smoke and mirrors.

Playing against a thin Bruins middle-six, he should have opportunities to test Swayman.

Viktor Arvidsson had multiple shots in 65% of all appearances despite routinely finding himself on Edmonton’s third or fourth line. He is projected to play on Boston’s second unit and should have a bigger role, allowing for his efficiency to shine through.

Bruins vs Capitals SGP

  • Under 5.5

  • Viktor Arvidsson Under 1.5 shots
