The Washington Capitals are in a bit of a rut, having dropped four consecutive games while scoring just five times along the way.

My Blues vs. Capitals predictions and NHL picks see the home side getting back on track offensively against a St. Louis team bleeding goals.

Blues vs Capitals prediction

Blues vs Capitals Best bet: Capitals moneyline (-150)

The Washington Capitals have lost four in a row, but they’ve played better than those results would suggest, particularly at 5-on-5.

Washington has controlled better than 55% of the expected goals and more than 57% of the scoring chances. They’ve spent a lot of time on the front foot dictating the run of play at even-strength.

Zooming out and looking at all game states, the Capitals piled up 119 scoring opportunities and 10.75 expected goals during this four-game slide.  That translated into only five goals, well below half of the expected output.

Simply put, the Capitals have generated plenty of chances but struggled mightily to convert. They have perhaps the best matchup possible to flip that on its head.

The St. Louis Blues enter tonight’s game tied for last in goals conceded and in sole possession of 32nd for team save percentage.

Projected starter Jordan Binnington owns an .868 save percentage and ranks 34th among 38 goaltenders (minimum six appearances) in goals saved above expectation per 60 minutes.

This is the perfect spot for the Capitals to find their scoring touch and get back on track.

Blues vs Capitals same-game parlay

We can’t talk about the Capitals scoring goals in bulk without mentioning Alex Ovechkin. He leads their forward group in shot attempts and scoring chances while remaining a focal point of their attack. With his heavy shot, he’s as likely as anybody to cause problems for a struggling goaltender.

John Carlson has picked up an assist in five of six Washington wins this season. He sits second on the Capitals in power-play helpers and often plays catch with Ovechkin atop the offensive zone.
