NFL playoff odds

As matchups get set, we will follow the NFL playoff odds here.

How the NFL playoff bracket works

The NFL playoffs play with the following rules:

  • The four divisional champions from the AFC and NFC are seeded one through four in their respective conferences, determined by their overall regular-season records. The top seed in each conference earns a bye to the second round, known as the Divisional Round.
  • Each conference also selects three wild card teams (non-division winners with the best remaining records), which are seeded five through seven based on their regular-season performance.
  • Re-seeding: Home-field advantage in each round is based on seeding rather than a fixed bracket. The NFL playoff structure adjusts after the Wild Card games to set up Divisional Round matchups. The lowest remaining seed in each conference travels to face the top seed, while the second-lowest remaining seed faces the next highest seed.
  • For the Conference Championships, the highest-remaining seed in each conference hosts the game.

In the event of a tied record, seeds are assigned as follows:

Ties for division seeding Ties for conference seeding
1. Best winning percentage in games between the tied teams. 1. Apply the division tiebreaker to eliminate all but the highest-ranked club in each division prior to proceeding to the next step.
2. Best winning percentage in in-division games 2. Head-to-head record, if applicable.
3. Best winning percentage in games played against the same teams 3. Best winning percentage in games played within the conference.
4. Best winning percentage in in-conference games. 4. Best winning percentage in common games, minimum of four.
5. Combined winning percentage of all the teams that a team has defeated during the season. 5. Combined winning percentage of all the teams that a team has defeated during the season.
