Big expectations in Queens. St John’s will open against Quinnipiac, ready to meet those expectations from Day 1.

Head coach Rick Pitino mentioned how excited he was but warned that tonight’s St. John’s will look different in two weeks. That tracks: the roster added several newcomers and returns just one starter from last year’s Sweet 16 run.

What does that mean for tonight? Find out in my St. John’s vs. Quinnipiac predictions and college basketball picks for Monday, November 3.

Quinnipiac vs St. John’s prediction

Quinnipiac vs St. John’s best bet: St. John's team total Under 92.5 (-125)

For my money, Rick Pitino is the best college basketball coach of my lifetime, and if he goes to another Final Four this season, that title is mostly undisputed.

Now that that’s out of the way, let’s address something about the 2025 St. John’s Red Storm: They are going into the year with a functional issue. It doesn’t mean it derails their season; it doesn’t even mean that it hurts them much (especially considering how good a coach Pitino is); however, it does mean I’ll be watching them curiously early this year to see how they work around it.

In the traditional sense, St. John’s doesn’t have a point guard for this level. I could riff as to why that’s the case, but I'll just leave it at that for the moment. It makes me wonder how the offense looks from Day 1, especially when you consider the fresh faces being thrown into the mix.

Without getting too technical into some of the concepts that I think Quinnipiac can show St. John’s to at least make them overthink, that’s the gist of this play. I don’t trust St. John’s enough to work in the half-court efficiently and score this many points.

Often, that doesn’t matter for Pitino teams, who generate so many points off their pressing actions, but again, with this being the opener, I wonder how many of those concepts are being introduced. I’ll take my chances with such a high number that my projections made 89.5.

Quinnipiac vs St. John’s same-game parlay

Because of the point guard situation, I think there will be some nice value on St. John’s assist props until roles are clarified. I’ll take a stab at a small number for Sellers, who averaged just over 1.3 assists last season and will see a decent amount of transition opportunities for easy scores.

I’ll finish with Joson Sanon to go Over his rebound number at a plus-money price. He’ll be one of the best athletes on the floor this evening, and for a game I think could have a few prolonged periods of misses, this is too low a number for the Arizona State transfer.
