It must be nice to be on a seven-game losing streak and still be in the postseason picture. That is the luxurious life for the Atlanta Hawks in the Eastern Conference, though if their spiral continues much longer, maybe Milwaukee or Charlotte will knock them out of the No. 10 seed.

The Minnesota Timberwolves should ensure that the spiral continues at least into 2026.

My Timberwolves vs. Hawks predictions and NBA picks doubt both teams’ focus, but Minnesota has more offensive firepower to make up for it on Wednesday, December 31.

Timberwolves vs Hawks prediction

Timberwolves vs Hawks best bet: Over 243.5 (-110)

While this is a hefty total, the mid-afternoon tip helps its cause. When the Minnesota Timberwolves’ effort or focus lags, it shows up defensively, part of why they have cashed three straight Overs.

Expect effort and focus to lag early on this afternoon. Early tips are notorious for it, as these game times conflict with players’ body rhythms of taking mid-afternoon naps. This is not a quip. It is very much a reality.

And when Trae Young is in the lineup, the Atlanta Hawks are obviously more prone to the Over, in no small part because of his lackluster defense, part of why they have cleared the total in their last two games by 9.5 and 33 points, respectively.

The Trae Young Era may be winding down in Atlanta, and it is not happening gracefully. An eight-game losing streak, combined with Young failing to contribute on either end, will only further that drama.

Timberwolves vs Hawks same-game parlay

This is a bit anecdotal, but a rough three-game shooting stretch in mid-November is the only time this season when Anthony Edwards has gone three straight games without hitting 30 points. Otherwise, he has cracked 30 at least once every three games, reaching 40 nearly as often as 30. Before his current two-game lull, Edwards had scored at least 30 points in nine of 13 games.

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
