Best NBA Player Props Today: Mitchell Remains a Machine

Donovan Mitchell has been a major bright spot for the middling Cleveland Cavaliers thus far, exploding for north of 30 points per game while also facilitating scoring for the rest at a solid rate. Spida headlines our NBA player prop picks tonight.

After a rare day off, basketball is back tonight with a monster 14-game slate that’s jam-packed with NBA odds.

The early pace-setters are in action, including a classic Eastern Conference showdown between the Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers, and the later tip-offs feature a Steph Curry-Nikola Jokic matchup. By any definition, that means a bucketload of NBA player props.

You can go in plenty of different directions with tonight’s NBA picks given the full menu of superstar props on offer, and I’ve selected my top three bets.

NBA player props for November 8

Prop bet #1: Spida on the loose

The Cleveland Cavaliers’ 3-4 start hasn’t been much to write home about, but Donovan Mitchell has wasted no time in flashing his All-NBA skillset once again. With the Cavs otherwise stumbling out of the blocks, Spida is keeping his team afloat while averaging 32.5 points and almost six assists a night.

Coming off 31 points and seven dimes in Sunday’s win over the Golden State Warriors, Mitchell is well-placed to stay hot in tonight’s matchup with the Oklahoma City Thunder, who are in the bottom third of the NBA in points allowed per game (116.7) and gave up 51 points to the Dejounte Murray-Trae Young backcourt on Monday.

Cleveland’s main man has already put in work against the Thunder this season, with a 43-point masterpiece on October 27, and I see him thriving again in a potential back-and-forth shootout with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

The standalone Mitchell points prop is attractive in its own right, even with the rugged Lu Dort sure to be shadowing him, but I’m tacking on the assists, too, for what feels like an added cushion. Spida has quietly upped his playmaking numbers this season and he’s on pace for a career-high in assists.

He’s had six or more dimes three times already this year and he’s tallied 16 across his past two outings.

Mitchell is knocking down triples at a 40% clip and getting six free throws a night to pad his scoring numbers. I like these odds for another complete offensive performance in Oklahoma City tonight.

Donovan Mitchell prop: Over 33.5 points+assists (-104 at FanDuel)

Prop bet #2: Harden's helping hand

The first look at James Harden with the L.A. Clippers confirmed that Ty Lue and his coaching staff have plenty of work ahead to mesh a starting lineup of ball-dominant stars. But, despite fading down the stretch in that 111-97 loss to the New York Knicks on Monday, the Clippers are going to make some noise when they’re all on the same page.

In the meantime, I’m jumping on the Harden assists prop tonight against the Brooklyn Nets, with a 6.5 Over/Under that’s seemingly been lowered in expectation of a clunky start with his new team.

But The Beard led the Clippers with six dimes on Monday while still building chemistry with his new teammates and ramping up towards a more typical minutes load.

Harden played 31 minutes against the Knicks and I expect that number to climb steadily over the next few weeks (along with his assist numbers). Taking on a Nets defense that’s allowing almost 118 points a game is a great opportunity for L.A. to flex their muscles — plus, Harden’s return to Barclays Center to face one of his former teams should give this matchup some added spice.

Most of all, I like this prop for a next-level playmaker who’s averaged 10+ assists in each of the last three seasons. Sure, he’s going to see less of the ball in an offense that features Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, and Russell Westbrook, but the Clippers brought The Beard to L.A. to be the floor general they were missing. Plenty of possessions are going to start with Harden running the show.

The line for this assists prop could balloon as soon as next week, so I’m grabbing the Over at this number while I still can.

James Harden prop: Over 6.5 assists (-120 at bet365)

Prop bet #3: Randle gets rolling

The New York Knicks are one of several Eastern Conference teams still searching for some rhythm after the opening weeks of the season — and how quickly they find top gear largely depends on Jalen Brunson and Julius Randle, who’ve both been inconsistent so far.

But I liked what I saw from Randle against the Clippers on Monday. He finished with 27 points and 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the year while making three 3-pointers and all six of his free throws. That was closer to All-Star Randle.

Now he gets a tasty matchup against the San Antonio Spurs, who were blown off the court in a 152-111 loss to the Indiana Pacers last time out. Randle’s physicality in the paint should be a major factor against a San Antonio frontcourt that’s more finesse than brute strength.

However you slice the numbers, the Spurs are one of the worst defensive teams in the NBA, giving up 126 points a game and allowing opponents to shoot 51%. They’re also a poor rebounding team, which is ominous ahead of a clash with Randle and Mitchell Robinson.

Foul trouble when guarding Victor Wembanyama is the only slight concern for Randle, but Robinson may see a lot of that assignment, which raises the possibility that the New York center will be on the bench.

All of the Randle props have some appeal, but his scoring numbers have been all over the map this year so I’m sticking with the double-double prop instead. He’s only failed to cash that prop once this season and I expect him to be a focal point for the Knicks again tonight.

Julius Randle prop: Double-double - Yes (+105 at FanDuel)
