Hornets vs Knicks Picks: NY Defense Will Shut Down Shorthanded Charlotte

Julius Randle is coming off a 33-point effort against the Pelicans, despite an off-night shooting-wise. He should have a better effort from the field, and continue racking up points, against Charlotte on Tuesday.

Against the spread (ATS) pick

The Knicks are on fire coming into this game, as they have won six straight and covered in nine in a row. Even games that are getting away from them have somehow turned into wins, as the New York was dead in the water against New Orleans on Sunday, yet the team somehow battled back to scrape out an overtime victory—and a cover.

Now, the Knicks host a Hornets team that is completely depleted by injuries.

Charlotte is coming off a 109-101 victory over Portland, but this team had lost four in a row heading into that one. Without LaMelo Ball, the Hornets are not the explosive offense they were before. The team really misses his creativity with the ball in his hands and the same goes for Gordon Hayward.

Hayward is one of the best point-forwards in the game, so the Hornets just don’t have anybody that can create for others in the half-court right now. Terry Rozier is a good scorer for this Charlotte team, but he doesn’t look at his teammates very often.

The Hornets also don’t have any legitimate threats to score in the paint, which means Nerlens Noel will be able to play a little free safety in this game for New York. Noel has emerged as one of the league’s most effective rim protectors, and his presence will make things difficult on guys like Miles Bridges and PJ Washington, who both like to score around the basket.

Charlotte also doesn’t have an answer for Julius Randle, who is beginning to make a legitimate case as an All-NBA player.

PREDICTION: Knicks -6.0 (-110)

Over/Under pick

The Hornets have scored 101 points or fewer in three of their last five as they just haven’t played at the same pace without Ball in the lineup. Now, Charlotte faces a New York team that plays slower than anyone, and the Knicks also happen to be elite defensively.

Tom Thibodeau’s team should be able to lock in against a struggling offense, and it’s unlikely New York really lights it up offensively. This really should end up going Under—especially if Devonte’ Graham ends up sitting.

PREDICTION: Under 210.5 (-110)

Player prop pick

Randle’s point total in Sunday’s meeting with the Pelicans was 26.5, and he ended up scoring 33 points—and he actually was off in that win over New Orleans. Randle was 11 for 28 from the floor in that game, and he was also just 2 of 8 from three.

Considering he shoots 46.1 percent from the field and 40.5 percent from the outside on the year, he’s likely due for some positive regression. That’s especially true against a Hornets team that doesn’t have anybody that can match his combination of skill and strength.

PREDICTION: Julius Randle Over 26.5 Points (-122)
