Starting pitchers
Walker Buehler (2-0, 2.98 ERA): Buehler is coming off seven innings of shutout ball against the Diamondbacks on May 17, and he struck out seven batters in that game. The righty has allowed two or fewer earned runs in six of his eight starts this season, and he gives the Dodgers an unbelievable opportunity to win whenever he is out there. Also, in Buehler’s only start against the Giants last season, he gave up two earned runs in 5.2 innings and struck out six batters in a 6-2 win for Los Angeles.
Scott Kazmir (0-0, 0.00 ERA): Kazmir hasn’t pitched in a Major League Baseball game since September 23, 2016, and that was a one-inning appearance against the Colorado Rockies. The lefty has only pitched 6.1 innings in AAA this year, too. However, he has allowed only two earned runs in that time, and the Giants clearly feel he’s capable of coming to the big leagues again. He was scratched from his start last night, and he’ll be on the mound here.

Moneyline pick
It’s rather difficult to bet against the Dodgers in a situation like this. Even without some of their stars in the lineup, Los Angeles has the more dangerous overall collection of hitters, with Mookie Betts and Justin Turner still being the two best between these teams at the moment. However, with Kazmir on the mound, there’s a reasonable chance the Giants end up getting the job done here.
The lefty hasn’t pitched in forever and it’s definitely hard to trust him out there, but it’s worth noting that Betts has struggled against left-handed pitching in his career. It’s rather surprising because he is an elite righty bat, but it’s just impossible to ignore. If Betts can’t get it going, that would put a lot of pressure on guys like Turner, Chris Taylor and Max Muncy. Turner can hit against anybody, and he’d probably be ecstatic in a matchup like this one. But the others are no sure things, making the Giants a decent value in this game.
San Francisco also gets to go against Buehler in this game. The righty has some unbelievable stuff, and he’s a feisty competitor. However, he does occasionally lose it out on the mound. Buehler gave up three homers against the Mariners on May 11, and he walked four batters against the Diamondbacks on Monday. Los Angeles was able to win both of those games, and Buehler did end up settling in and pitching great against Seattle. But that won’t fly against a very good San Francisco team.
The Giants just have what it takes to get to Buehler, with lefties like Mike Yastrzemski, Brandon Crawford and Brandon Belt all having the necessary pop to take Buehler yard. And Buster Posey has been unbelievable this season, so he can hit anyone right now.
PREDICTION: Giants ML (+148)
Over/Under pick
For as good as Buehler is on the mound, three of his last four starts have gone Over the total. The reality is that the righty does occasionally run into some trouble, and the Giants have a lineup filled with lefties, who generally prefer hitting against right-handed starters. Buehler can go out there and blank any team on any given night, but this doesn’t seem like a game where he’ll completely escape trouble. San Francisco scored just one run on Friday, and it’s not easy to keep this offense down in back-to-back games.
Also, the Dodgers will be licking their chops about getting to face a starter that was in the minors earlier in the week. Los Angeles might not be a great value to win this game, but the team is going to score a few runs. The Over seems like the right play here.
