North Carolina Sportsbooks’ Year-Over-Year Revenue Rises 44% in June

The Tarheel State's eight online operators enjoyed a 13% hold on a $433 million handle, the second-highest since mobile wagering began in March 2024.

North Carolina sports betting operators produced over $50 million in gross profit in back-to-back months, the third time since online wagering started in March 2024.

The North Carolina State Lottery Commission reported eight mobile sportsbooks hauled in $58.1 million in May, combining with June's $65.2 million to match the $50 million feat for the second time this year. Revenue generated during a month with the NBA and NHL Finals, as well as a heavy MLB slate, was up 44.2% from last June. 

Tar Heel State bettors wagered $433.2 million in June, an 8.8% year-over-year increase. However, June’s handle decreased 23% month-over-month, and was the first under $500 million since August 2024.

Hold up

Sportsbook-friendly NBA results that dominated May continued in June. Bettors won back $372.2 million, their lowest haul in 10 months. 

June’s 13.4% hold was the highest North Carolina sports betting operators produced year-to-date and the second-best ever behind April 2024’s record 16.2% win rate. Tar Heel State sportsbooks enjoyed a double-digit hold for the 11th time in 16 months of online wagering and generated a 12% or higher win rate for the fifth time. 

Operators spent $12.2 million in promotional bets, down $2 million from May and more than $4 million less than June 2024. Canceled and voided wagers were also down over $1 million in June.  

Fiscal year in the books

North Carolina filled its coffers with an estimated $10.4 million from an 18% tax rate. With fiscal year 2025 ending, the Tar Heel state collected a projected $116.6 million in proceeds. 

The Lottery Commission reported bettors wagered $6.4 billion during FY 2025, with operators generating more than $647 million. North Carolina bettors won over $5.9 million in the first full 12-month fiscal-year cycle.
