A rebound in retail activity helped Michigan’s sports-wagering handle tick up in June, as the state saw both the overall amount of betting and its related revenue rise last month.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board reported on Monday that the state’s total sports-betting handle for June was approximately $259.5 million, which was made up of $235.1 million in online wagers and about $24.4 million in retail action.
Michigan’s June handle was an increase over May’s wagering, which amounted to around $257.7 million in online and in-person bets. May’s retail action in the state had been nearly $20.2 million, while its internet handle had been $237.5 million.
Moreover, Michigan’s gross revenue from sports betting last month was approximately $27.2 million, up from around $21.3 million in May. As a result, the unofficial win percentage for Michigan books in June was almost 10.5 percent, an increase over May’s 8.3 percent.
June’s leader in online handle among sportsbooks was Detroit's MotorCity Casino Hotel, which is run by FanDuel. The partners reported a total internet handle of approximately $77.3 million for June, up from about $71.2 million in May.
"Michigan's gross internet casino gaming and online sports betting wagering receipts in June roughly matched May," said Henry Williams, executive director of the Michigan Gaming Control Board, in a press release. "Summer is here, and Michigan is reopening after the pandemic restrictions so there are many entertainment opportunities."
More company
Michigan’s sports-betting market has gotten a bit more crowded as well.
The latest numbers out of the state come after the MGCB recently announced they had authorized the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi Tribe, owners of FireKeepers Casino Hotel in Battle Creek, to launch internet casino gaming and online sports betting.
Both the band and their platform provider, NYX Digital, can now do so under the FireKeepers brand, making the casino the 13th operator to offer the gambling combination.
"We welcome the addition of FireKeepers Casino and partner NYX Digital to Michigan's growing online gaming and sports wagering market," Williams said in a July 12 press release. "The tribe's representatives provided key support for development of the laws signed in 2019 that allow federally recognized tribes in Michigan to seek licenses for internet casino gaming and online sports betting. Their participation will generate revenue to support K-12 education, economic development and the Nottawaseppi Huron Band's tribal community."
