Bettors Pulling for Seahawks, Big Points at BetMGM

The favored Seahawks have moved to -4.5 in the early going, though the Patriots have seen some moneyline action at the online operator. Over 45.5 points is a popular pick as well.

BetMGM is putting its hopes in the New England Patriots and a low score in Super Bowl LX.

Key Takeaways

  • The Seahawks opened as 4-point favorites at the online operator but have moved to -4.5.

  • New England has seen some moneyline action from BetMGM customers so far.

  • Seattle receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba is a popular pick in the touchdown scorer markets.

The Big Game isn’t until Feb. 8, and the trend could still change, but early wagering at the online sportsbook has the favored Seahawks and the over 45.5 very much en vogue.

“In the biggest event of the year, bettors are pulling for the Seahawks, while the book hopes for a low-scoring affair with minimal touchdowns,” BetMGM trading manager Christian Cipollini said Thursday.

The Seahawks, who opened at -4 but have moved to -4.5, are getting 65% of the spread tickets and 68% of the handle so far at BetMGM. The operator also reported that 55% of the bets are on the over. However, the under is getting 69% of the money.

In the outright winner market, early bettors are taking a chance on the +195 underdog Patriots, who are getting 67% of the bets, but 52% of the handle is on Seattle at BetMGM.

Prop positions

The Super Bowl is king of props, and BetMGM customers are already taking aim at those markets.

“Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Seattle’s Defense/Special Teams finding paydirt have become bad results for the book right now,” Cipollini said.

Smith-Njigba, Seattle’s star receiver, is BetMGM’s most-bet anytime touchdown scorer, even with short, -110 odds. So bettors are also backing him to be the first touchdown scorer with a much juicier +600.

The Seahawks' defense/special teams has taken the fourth-most tickets in both the anytime (+390) and first (+3,000) TD bets. New England’s Drake Maye and Seattle’s Kenneth Walker and Cooper Kupp are also getting action in those scoring markets.

Walker’s over 20.5 receiving yards (-175) and under 73.5 rushing yards (-115) are BetMGM’s most-bet player props by tickets. Patriots tight end Hunter Henry’s over 36.5 rushing yards (-140), Maye’s over 36.5 rushing yards (-115), and New England running back TreVeyon Henderson’s over 0.5 receptions are also in the top five.

Big bets

In the Super Bowl winner futures market, BetMGM reported earlier in the week that the Seahawks own the highest handle percentage (13.2%).

The operator is sweating out some major paydays as well. Among notable bets, BetMGM said a $30,000 wager on the Patriots to win the Super Bowl at +2,200 would net a bettor $660,000.

But that would be a better outcome than if another wager worth $50,000 on the Seahawks at +6,000 hits, costing BetMGM $3 million.

“While there’s still some time before the game, it looks like the game and futures market will be rewarding to bettors if the Seahawks cover the game and win outright,” Cipollini said.
