This will not be and easy series for Devs. I read lots of blogs saying this was the best series for the devs, that was a wrong statment for many to say. They have a cup winning goalie who stands on his head against the devils, Ward is truly in the top 3 in my estimation and has alway's been. They have big time PP UNIT, DEVS PK has gone in the tank lately. Stay out of the box!! Marty looked very human like even as recent as Sunday, two goals between body and arm, has to play much better!! Put pucks on net and forecheck to beat Canes. Looks like Rupp and Holik are odd men out unless Brent has change of heart. It will be a war as all series are, it will take lots of little things to win.

The Rangers will beat Washington in the first playoff round. If only it was so easy to play as it is to write it. Of course, the Blueshirts matchup with the Capitals will be fraught with challenges, but that's what the playoffs are all about. For starters, The Maven wants it known up front that I'm not the least bit interested in statistics (That's why some guy made a mint writing a best-seller, "How to Lie with Statistics"). Any stats you may refer to in analyzing the Rangers and Caps come from the regular season which is HISTORY, OVER, IRRELEVANT. This is The New Season, where things happen differently than they do in the regular campaign. One story tells it all: In the 1941-42 campaign, the Toronto Maple Leafs best scorer was Gordie Drillon and their two best defensemen were Bucko McDonald and Bingo Kampman. The trio were inept in the first three games of the Finals against Detroit. Leafs coach Hap Day benched them all and inserted three mostly-minor leaguers; forward Don Metz and Dmen Ernie Dickens and Bob Goldham. They became immediate stars and Toronto won four straight and The Cup. Back to the Rangers. They'll beat Washington because they have the most important player of all, Henny Lundqvist. Goaltending wins playoffs and New York has a hot one. The Caps Jose Theodore has "Sieve" written all over him. Now you're going to ask me, "What about Al Ovechkin?" Good question. I love the guy along with millions of other hockey fans. However, John Tortorella has the perfect antidote to Ovie and that happens to be Sean Avery. Or, have you forgotten how The Great Gabbo thoroughly drove Atlanta"s Ilya Kovalchuk nuts in the opening playoff round two Springs ago? The Thrashers went out in four straight and, as far as I know, Ilya is still talking to himself. Yes, I'm fully aware that the Caps also have folks such as Al Semin, Nik Backstrom and the ever-popular Vik Kozlov who know a bit about shooting the biscuit. Oh, brother, how I respect their offense but voracious checking, A-1 goaltending and insightful blueprinting (by Torts) can defuse the best attackers. Playoffs-past prove this point over and over and over again. (Check out Bobby Orr And The Big, Bad Bruins who were knocked off by Ken Dryden and Montreal in 1971.) What I don't respect is the Washington defense. Yeah, the Caps have a winner in Mike Green but he's not even a defenseman. His listing to the contrary, Green actually is a ROVER. He's more interested in scoring than defending and – like Orr was – is vulnerable to a quick counterattack. After Green, I can't find anyone on the Washington roster who the Rangers really would want on their blue line. The addition of Derek Morris has given New York a well-rounded defense. I expect Wade Redden to step up his game and there's no reason to doubt that Dan Girardi, Mike Rozsival, Paul Mara and the rest of the worthies can do the job AS A UNIT. Clearly, I'm basing my prediction on the offense delivering. Nik Antropov, in particular, is poised for a big series. Ditto Chris Drury, Scott Gomez and – no chuckles in the balcony, please! – Nik Zherdev. New York's penalty-killing IS the best and, who knows, maybe the power play will shape up against a mediocre Washington D this time around. Home ice advantage? That's nonsense. I'm with Torts when he asserts that it's just as advantageous to open on the road. Pressure, believe it or not, is on the home team. Plus, the Rangers ARE underdogs ... No matter. NEW YORK IN SIX GAMES. |

Sorry again for the next morning review. The wife made me watch Twilight with her and I had to record the game. It's like I was being punished for something I didn't do. Although, the game wasn't much better.
Overall: It looked like we were reminded of the team we used to have. In a 2-1 loss, there wasn't much going in the way of offense especially with being handed 5 Powerplay chances. There was no team effort and poor communication which led to turnovers resulting in both Senators goals. Yes, they played the night before but so did Ottawa (plus they had to travel) so that can't even be used as an excuse. They simply just didn't "want it" in this game. But, as usual, some positives need to be taken out of this and here they are... 3 Keys to the Game 1)Ryan Callahan - For the second straight game, he notches the #1 spot. He seemed to be the only Ranger playing with intensity and a full tank of gas. He notched an assist on the opening goal by pressuring Auld behind the net, not to mention pressuring everywhere else on the ice. He got many chances and even hit the post on a great opportunity but unfortunatly, he can't always do it by himself. 2)Brandon Dubinsky - FINALLY!....the snake bitten is the only one to get the puck in the back of the net. Hopefully this positive gets him out of his rut and he can contribute with some more goals. Aside from his goal, he was laying on the hits, playing physical and seemed to be one of the few guys getting in the other teams face. 3)Marc Stall - Another great defensive game by Stall. Holding the Senators to only 22 shots is still a positive to take out of this defeat and Stall led the defensive group to holding the Sens back. He broke up some key plays the Senators tried to make which could have made this game a lot worse if he wasn't there. Honorable Mention: Faceoff Men - All the faceoff men get the mention in this game as they walloped the Sens with 40+ faceoff wins. Winning faceoffs is key for control at both ends of the ice and they did a fabulous job of doing this. Overall Team/Game Grade: C- Discuss. |

We all know the wild is a good defensive team (3rd in GA), but lacking in offensive firepower (27th in GF). |

No, he's not a Norris Trophy candidate, but the defenseman played one of his best games of the season in the critical win over Montreal on Tuesday and has enough assets to be a positive factor under Torts from here to April 12. SCOTT GOMEZ: His leadership and maturity appear to have been enhanced under the new coach. He has melded neatly with Sean Avery and Callahan, and he should be THE go-to guy in the battle for a playoff berth. The Captain and the coach appear to be in excellent synch. Drury's attitude clearly is more positive than ever and he should turn into Ole Reliable now that the chips are down. Parts of the machinery that had not been working – such as the power play – are now progressing in a positive way. The club has recovered from its terrible tailspin. It will make the playoffs. And if you're wondering why, read on: My bottom line on Torts is that he's the perfect coach for the perfect team at the perfect time. That's why! |
