Why the Giants can win tonight
Dallas is a 3-point road favorite because of Dak, CeeDee, Pickens, and a decade of owning this series. That’s the market. The Giants side is not “Dallas is bad.” It’s that this specific night lines up for New York: new coach, Year 2 dual-threat QB, a real pass rush against a banged-up Cowboys line, and a version of Dak that usually starts slow.
1. Harbaugh’s first game is the actual edge
John Harbaugh is the biggest offseason add in this building. His Ravens teams were ready in Week 1. This staff is built in his image — Likely, Ricard, Reader, Harris, Stout. Culture and preparation don’t show up in a spread the same way Dak’s résumé does. Week 1 is when that gap is largest. Dallas has a new DC (Christian Parker) too. Both defenses are new. The difference is Harbaugh has done this movie. Parker hasn’t called a defense as the lead guy on Sunday Night Football.
2. Dart was good enough last year — and this offense is built for him
Jaxson Dart in 2025: 12 starts, 2,272 yards, 15 TD, 5 INT, 91.7 rating, plus 487 rush yards and 9 rushing TDs. He wasn’t a finished pocket passer. He was a problem when the pocket broke. That’s the version that beats Dallas if the game gets messy.

The hole: Malik Nabers is still questionable (ACL last year). Schefter called it “murky.” Inactives drop ~6:50 ET. If he plays, this case gets a lot stronger. If he sits, Likely has to be the offense. That’s the swing factor — not a reason to abandon the lean, but don’t pretend it’s the same roster either way.
3. The trenches favor New York more than the line says
This is the best football reason to take the Giants.
Giants rush vs Dak
Burns, Abdul Carter, Thibodeaux, Reese. Carter led rookies in pressures last year. Dallas is missing All-Pro LG Tyler Smith (thumb). T.J. Bass starts. Terence Steele allowed an NFL-high 52 pressures last season. Guyton vs Carter is the game-inside-the-game. If New York wins early downs, Dak is throwing on schedule he doesn’t like.
Cowboys rush vs Dart
Quinnen Williams and Kenny Clark can wreck the interior. The edge group (Gary, rookie Lawrence, Ezeiruaku, some Von) is “better than last year,” not elite. Dart also turns pressure into first downs. Sacks on him are harder to cash than hits on Dak.
Brian Baldinger’s public take this week was blunt: Giants should control the line of scrimmage. That’s the underdog script.
4. Dak in Week 1 is not Dak in November
Career Week 1: 4–6, 88.9 rating, 1.0 TD per game, 6.6 Y/A. That’s well below his normal season.
Last four openers: 188, 179, 143, 134 yards. Two of those had zero passing TDs. The 2019 Giants game (405 yards, 4 TD) is the exception people quote. The 2023 MetLife opener he threw for 143 in a 40–0 win — Dallas won with defense and explosives, not a Dak clinic.
So “Dak owns the Giants” and “Dak is rusty in Week 1” can both be true. Tonight you need the second one to show up and New York to finish.
5. The rivalry isn’t as one-way as the moneyline
Dallas has crushed this series for years. Giants also beat them 34–17 in Week 18 last season. That game is why this isn’t Cowboys -7. Dart already has a full-game tape against this roster. Harbaugh has a week to use it.
