You just answered the debat right there, the refs said it was an incomplete pass, meaning he NEVER had possession. His possession was lost once the ball hit the ground ( becasue he was trying to extend the yardage gained, a defender never knoced the ball out), which should bring in the rule that the ground can not cause a fumble on a completed catch. He never lost possession of the ball once it touched his hands at the 4-5 yard line.
Did the refs forget a Rule?
