Sometimes I scratch my head and think NFL coaches are just stupid. Take the Bears-Panthers game this past Sunday. The Panthers got the ball back with a little over a minute left trailing 34-23. Even a novice football fan understands that's two scores. Several plays into the drive, Newton connected with Steve Smith on a nice pass play and got the ball down to the Chicago 12 yard line with approximately 30 seconds left. Then the Panthers took 4 more plays to finally get the ball in the end zone with 4 seconds remaining in the game. How the hell does Coach Ron Rivera expect to win the game with 4 seconds left still needing another score? Are coaches that stupid?
Is it that difficult for a coach to understand that his mathematical chances of winning the game are maximized in this situation by immediately kicking a FG with 30 seconds left so you can go for an onsides kick leaving your team with approximately 25 seconds left for a TD. At least this way, the Panthers would've had a chance. There is basically no chance for them to win with four seconds left having to attempt an onsides kick.
Yes, I admit it burned me as I had the Bears -6.5 and the final ended 34-29 on the 4th down TD with 4 seconds left but I honestly couldn't believe what I was watching and realizing how some coaches just don't understand certain football concepts.

Burned me too Game....and the sad thing is, there are examples of that across the league...amazing how many coaches don't even know what they can and can't challenge...

It's situations like these and situations where a team that has the lead late in the game just needs a first down to ice it and a guy breaks a long one and runs into the end zone for a TD instead of falling down after the first down and icing it. Thank goodness for Maurice Jones-Drew for finally understanding it last season.

If you're talking about the Jags/Raiders game last year, I rather forget about it.........Jones scoring that td cost me over $4,000 in parlays.............

Game the one that gets me is this- A team is down 15 late in the game. They score and elect to kick the extra point. I am like wtf? If you want to win the game why not go for two right then and there. If you make it cool, you need the TD to tie. If you miss it you know RIGHT NOW YOU STILL NEED TWO SCORES!!!! But you see teams kick the extra point and then miss the two pointer later and lose late. Why the heartbreak? I just do not get it. I have had the opportunity to ask some coaches this question and their answer is "if you miss the two pointer early you lose the momentum" ok what happens when you miss it late. Either way, you need two, might as well know if you need some more. Crash

Along these lines there is a great book called Scorecasting. It is written by Wertheim and talks about how many football customs do not make much sense. There is a coach who ignores all of them and plays somewhere down south. It is a hoot, with no punting and onside kicks after every score. These, mathematically, have proven to be the BEST STRATEGIES IN FOOTBALL!

I understand what you are saying but I am not sure I am so cut and dry on this one. I agree to a certain extent with the coaches that if you blow the first two point conversion, you have taken the wind out of your team's sails and lost momentum but I do see your point.

I'd be interested in reading it. I agree with the onsides kick theory in a game where a team has an unstoppable offense for sure.

Different game. I think it was Jacksonville against the Jets where Drew broke one at the end of the game and had an open run to the end zone for an easy TD and instead he stopped at the 1 yard line and fell to the ground essentially ending the game. Smartest player I have ever seen.
I took a loss last year because of some dumbass on the Arizona Cards. I bet against the Cards and on the last play of the game, the Cards intercepted the ball sealing the victory. Instead of falling to the ground, this dumb ass, cut back across field, broke 5 tackles and ran it back for a TD and covered the spread as time ran out.

In the scorecasting book they totally shoot down the momentum theory too. We are just programmed that way and believe all the hog wash passed down from year to year

Same thing happened with the Colts vs. Titans game last season week 14 with the Colts up 30-21. On the final drive, the Titans managed to slowly find their way towards the redzone instead of kicking the FG when they had the chance. I believed they went for it on 4th down on a couple of occasions. One being it was 4th down and 5 (I'm going to guess) and they decide to score a TD at the very last second...pointless TD to win 30-28...when I had Colts -3.
I believe a lot of people on here would remember this game.

A week later and things don't change in the NFL. How stupid are coaches in the NFL? The Bears are down 11 points late in the game. They need 2 scores. With 48 seconds left, they are in FG territory to cut it to an 8 point game against the Lions. What do they do? They run 5 more plays and end up on the 2 yard line as time runs out!

I just dont get. I can see if you are on the 5 yard line and there is 20 seconds left and you are thinking we need the td now. They chicago had plenty of time to kick the fg and drive back down. I just dont understand what there thinking is. This is one reason why people think sports are fixed. I dont but i see why.
Isnt the goal to win? You need 2 scores. So what they scored with 5 seconds left a td. You cant recover the onsides and get a fg. Would love to hear why they do this stupid shit.

If the dumbass had called for the field goal in the first quarter instead of going for the 4 and 1, I bet those quitters would have moved a little faster. He needs to be fired along with Caldwell.

I really think these coaches are stupid. Yes, they can draw up plays and set defenses but they don't understand the concept of winning and maximizing your probability of winning!!!!

THE BEARS FUCKED UP 3 TIMES IN 3 WEEKS FOR THEIR BACKERS...one phantom call, one idiotic defensive letup w/ 4 sec left, and tonight...on offense on last drive, not giving a shit...
FUCK THE CHICAGO BEARS...NO ONE IN THE COUNTRY COULD NOW BET ON THIS TEAM...THEIR O-LINE IS BAD, THEY DON'T HAVE A GREAT CHANCE TO COVER ANYTHING EVER WITH THAT SWISS CHEESE DEFENSE...CAN'T TACKLE FOR SHIT EITHER...HESTER CAN BE NEUTRALIZED IF SMART

Add Marvin Lewis to that list too. Then again, he's had like nine lives.
