    2019 Record: 2-1

Cowboys over Seahawks 30 Units W
Raptors over Spurs 1 Unit L
Eagles over Saints 4 Units W

If the line is too high? We can't bet it, obviously.

But if the line is too low, we are too much of a skeptic to bet it and we back off. We believe we are being goaded to bet it, only to lose (and many times we DO lose with those 'too good to be true' lines).

This one is perfect. I wanted to see the Lakers as a 6.5 pt favorite right under the classic key number of 7 (not to high or low), but still, to the sharps, a spread that represents a gross overvaluing of a Laker team that has lost 5 of 7 and lost 6 of 7 ATS.

So the sharps will jump on the Bulls. But I say go square and take the Lakers right now. That is why I posted this at 10pm the night before right when the line came out.

Why? They just got their as*es handed to them at home by a team that had a winning percentage under .200.

But that last game was not as easy as perceived. With Lebron out the Lakers have been lazily wading through games, the spotlight off them, their team leader obviously not there on the court to chastise them for their woeful play.

The Cavs in their one visit to LA had this game circled for a LONG time. So whether Lebron is on the court or not, they wanted to bring everything last night and they did. So the loss really isn't all that shocking.

If you want total dejection personified, you have to watch this:

    https://fadeawayworld.net/2019/01/14/lakers-look-absolutely-miserable-after-latest-lost-to-cavs/

Grief and despair, right down to the general manager...

So for this year, with Lebron on this team playing or not, this is ROCK BOTTOM imo. Much like the Eagles Saints 48-7 thrashing.

And the Rock Bottom Angle needs one of two requirements for the next game ATS:

    1) Play a very poor team on the road so the line is light;

    OR

    2) Play a good team at home highly motivated.

1 is preferable to 2. And 1 can be switched for home to road if the line is right.

This line of Lakers -6.5 translates to Bulls +.5 at home. That is the perfect line. It's asking the Lakers to win straight up away (or win in a mildly dominant fashion at home).

And the parenthetical is very reasonable in my eyes under the classic key number of 7.

You just had the WORST team in the league snap a 12 game losing steak against you now you have the second worst team coming in with a 7 game losing streak.

This is and always has been a proud Laker franchise (so much so you even see friggin Rob Pelinka hanging his head in that clip, this losing permeating all levels), and not one but TWO losses to the two worst teams at home, on a combined 19 game losing streak, is unacceptable.

I look for LA to come out strong and win by 12-14 making 6.5 more than attractive.

Line will go up if you see this late. (I think, I've been wrong many times in that regard).

I like it too, Lakers -6.5 for the public seems a tad too high...

Was the only game GucciCapper had circled in the NBA tomorrow.  GucciCapper won't make a thread on this game because you've said enough here Scalbrine.

One additional point GucciCapper would like to point out.

    1) If the Lakers do manage to lose this game, they go on the road to OKC and Houston.  Then have the Warriors back in Staples on the 22nd.  Looks like three more losses for the Lakers.  The Lakers should be fully focused to make a statement against this horrible Bulls squad.

GucciCapper completely agrees with your analysis.  Spot on.

    Goodluck.

    Hope you hit it man!
Have to say that the lakers without lebron are really terribile though. You can tell they try,but they just dont have it,especially on offense...They have no efficient shot creators aside from kuzma who in a good team would be a little more than spot up shooter.
This game will probably be played not on lakers motivations, who i think tried even with the cavs to win(they didn t have it as i said before, they have a play who cant shoot the 3,32 % in season and the guards who cant beat their man) but on the bulls ones.
If the bulls come to los angeles willing to win they will probably cover the spread.I think the line is right where it should be.
You have to hope markannen e lavine partied o all night, the disco are nice in la i heard,so it could be a possibility.

I'm sorry,i said the line is where ti should be but it is false. It's inflated for LA side.

So I know in the NFL the home team get 3 points "theoretically " towards the spread that you have to consider when looking at the line. So if team A in the NFL was -3 at home then that would suggest if they were on the road they would be +3. You say in your write up that the line of 6.5 equates to the bulls being +.5 @ home. So in the NBA a team "theoretically" gets 7 for being at home like the team in the NFL gets 3 for being home? If so, I didnt know this. Very interesting.

And when I say "theoretically" I know we don't SEE the 7 points given to the home team. Its more a conscious consideration when looking at the lines to know that vegas gives the home team a set amount of points every home game for home court advantage.

I like the Over gentlemen. The Bulls have history with Lebron and are looking to avenge themselves while he is off the floor. Any takes?

Yes the standard home to road swing is 6 to 7 points.

Obviously it will never come out a perfect swing because of other factors (injuries, streaks, internal conflicts etc). In the playoffs it gets as high as 10. Then you have other adjustments for which home court is more meaningful: playing AT a Golden State in for example. The Knicks have one of the lowest home court ATS advantages on the other side of the coin.

    No Geez.

The Lakers psychological motivation IS THE SELLING POINT in the OP.

It uses the Rock Bottom angle.

There comes a point where the team has to come out like gangbusters and lay waste to a bottom feeder while taking out their frustrations from the headline making embarrassment two nights before.

Chicago is Chicago. They are going through the motions for Zion but obviously any team can come to play on any nights as the Cavs proved.

I used the same angle with St John’s over Tulane two years ago after they lost to Delaware State (a unconscionable loss for them at the time).

Scal, tailing you on this for 2 units. I don't trust myself these days. Yesterday I liked the Kings and Rockets but stayed away. Today I liked the Lakers in this spot, so I'll use you as an excuse to pull the trigger for 2 units:) The only really worry here, imo, is the Lakers free throw shooting. They have been awful, even when the refs are gifting them points. According to the Forbes article below, Lakers don't even have a shooting coach How can one of the most illustrious franchises in all of sports not have a shooting coach when the sport is all about shooting the ball? Did Donald Sterling buy the team? Are they trying to save money? Anyway, hope the FT shooting does not sink this bet.

BTW, this is a great article talking about many of your talking points about this game. Who the hell knew Forbes writes basketball articles. Maybe it is because the Lakers stock is so low right now?!

    Great article Bb.

I like the way it crescendos at the end, free throw abominations be damned:

If ever the Lakers needed a win this early in the season, it would be Tuesday against the Bulls. A loss could very well turn the season into the kind of fiasco some in the front office would characterize as drastic.

I once saw Ben Wallace shoot a free throw, hit the side of the backboard and get no rim.

I can’t for the life of me understand how Yao Ming, a man who is one of the biggest giants to walk the earth, can shoot 83% for his career and guys who look like dwarfs next to him can’t shoot 50%.
