gotta go back to "the golden age of sitcom's" in the 1970's for the three best comedies EVER. All in the Family (1971 thru 1979), Barney Miller (1975 thru 1982) & The Carol Burnett Show (1967 thru 1978)
as for drama, Hill Street Blues (1981 thru 1987), NYPD Blue (1993 thru 2005) and Law & Order (1990 thru 2010) I think were the best ever although the current Ray Donovan (on Showtime with season three premier Sunday July 12th) The Blacklist (NBC) and Breaking Bad (AMC) are all excellent

Loved Californication! I binged watched the entire series within a week.
You really can't rate comedies, dramedies and dramas together so I'll give you 3 lists:
Drama
1.) The Wire
2.) The Sopranos
3.) OZ
Comedy
1.) South Park
2.) Seinfeld
3.) The Office
Dramedy
1.) Shameless
2.) House of Lies
3.) Californication

3.) Sanford and Son
Oh NUTS!!! completely forget about Sanford and Son staring Redd Foxx as Fred Sanford, Demond Wilson as his son Lamont and Whitman Mayo as Fred's best friend Grady. other notable (and hilarious) characters were LaWanda Page as Aunt Esther, Nathaniel Taylor as Lamont's "running buddy" Rollo, Gregory Sierra as the Sanford's Hispanic neighbor Julio and the two LA Cops Smitty and Hoppy played by Hal Williams and Howard Platt. ran six seasons in the mid 1970's and was definitely one the BEST of the "Golden Age of Comedy" on TV.

The Wire
Hawai'i 5-0 (original)
Arrested Development.
A tip of the cap, though to Mr. Rat for his inclusion of Barney Miller, one of the most under-rated shows of all time. I note also that MASH did not show up anywhere in this thread. I would agree with that, but was surprised nobody else liked it more than me.

MASH definitely needs to be added. yet another "golden age of comedy" show BUT with a serious side coming right after the end of the Vietnam War and one of the highest-rated shows in American television history. the 2 1/2 hour long final episode of MASH had 125 million viewers when broadcast on February 28, 1983.it was broadcast live world wide on Armed Forces television (AFN)
